Job Summary:


The Fire Safety Technician will be located in Connellsville, PA and will report to the Supervisor and General Supervisor of Fire & Safety Services. The individual will serve as a member of the Fire & Safety Services South unit of the BETA Laboratory. Duties include: support the inspection, maintenance and testing of portable fire extinguishers, fire hose, fire hydrants, fire control valves, emergency eye wash/shower stations, Self Contained Breathing Apparatus’s (SCBA’s) and other miscellaneous safety equipment at power stations, service and office buildings and substations, and the facilitation of fire and/or safety training classes.


Summary of Responsibilities:


  • Maintain and enhance a safe working environment, while achieving targeted production with high quality results.
  • Complete training and achieve qualification and proficiency in assigned field or shop duties.
  • Interact with firepro365 software and other software applications, for asset tracking, inspection, maintenance, and testing records and compliance reporting.
  • Maintain State of Ohio and State of West Virginia Fire Protection License for Portable Fire Extinguishers.
  • Perform periodic inspection and maintenance of fire protection and safety equipment in power stations, office and service buildings, vehicles, and substations in accordance with OSHA and NFPA requirements.
  • Perform recharging, and hydrostatic retesting in a workshop setting in compliance with NFPA and DOT regulations.
  • Understanding of basic DOT requirements listed in 49 CFR in relation to hydrostatic requalification of compressed gas cylinders.
  • Facilitate fire and/or safety training classes for internal power station and energy delivery personnel, as well as external customers.
  • Be responsive to internal and external customer needs to ensure superior results.
  • Complete inspection reports in accordance with laboratory quality procedures.
  • Understanding of, and commitment to basic concepts of industrial safety and human performance.
  • Recognize conditions that affect accuracy and quality of work and be able to make the appropriate adjustments to ensure correct results.
  • Proficient in the area of technical specialization. Skills include: job coordination, analysis, data review/reporting, approval and quality assurance/control etc.
  • Perform more complex tasks and analysis related to the area of assignment.
  • Interface directly with management, field engineers, vendors and contractors to resolve problems and to ensure projects are completed correctly and on time.
  • Develop and revise new training materials for all aspects of the Fire & Safety Services unit.
  • Assist in work of higher classification as assigned and perform other similar and less skilled tasks.
  • Demonstrate teamwork, adaptability, initiative, dependability, good judgment and work ethic.
  • Be able to make appropriate adjustments to ensure accuracy and correct results.
  • Trains less experienced technicians, as assigned.

Qualifications for the Adv Laboratory Tech include:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, plus 6+ years’ work experience in a related field, or Associate’s degree plus 5+ years’ experience or Bachelor’s degree plus 3+ years’ experience in a related discipline.
  • Work experience with an electric utility or similar industrial setting preferred.
  • Experience as a training instructor, with training program development skills preferred.
  • Current State of Ohio and State of West Virginia portable fire extinguisher fire protection license preferred.
  • Must be able to obtain unescorted access by completing a thorough background check and fitness for duty evaluation
  • Proven ability to demonstrate problem solving skills and ability to quickly learn new tasks.
  • Ability to work independently with little or no supervision.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to work on open grating at various heights.
  • Must be able to work overtime and overnight travel.
  • Proven skill in both written and verbal communications.
  • Basic understanding of computer software including Microsoft products to maintain record information.
  • Maintain valid driver’s license and good driving record.
