We are currently seeking experienced candidates for the position of Associate Vice Chancellor, Student Success and Inclusive Excellence. The CSU Chancellor's Office, located on the waterfront adjacent to the Aquarium of the Pacific in downtown Long Beach, is the headquarters for the nation's largest and most diverse system of higher education. The CSU Chancellor's Office offers a premium benefit package that includes outstanding vacation, health, and dental plans; a fee waiver education program; membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (PERS); and 14 paid holidays a year.

Salary

The salary range for this classification is $9,167 to $29,425 per month. The anticipated salary hiring range is up to $21,667 per month, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Position Information

The California State University, Office of the Chancellor, is seeking an Associate Vice Chancellor, Student Success and Inclusive Excellence to provide vision, thought leadership, strategies and solutions to advance student success, equity, and inclusive excellence across the CSU. The Associate Vice Chancellor also provides expert advice to the CSU Chancellor, the Board of Trustees, and campus leaders in fostering a culture of student success and equity with an intentional focus on better supporting underserved student populations across the CSU.

The Associate Vice Chancellor also represents the Chancellor of the California State University at the Academic Senate of the California State University (ASCSU) and serves as the primary liaison between the Division of Academic and Student Affairs and ASCSU. Through the work with the ASCSU, this position also supports the Executive Vice Chancellor in building and maintaining relationships with the CSU faculty.

Responsibilities

Under the general direction of the Executive Vice Chancellor, Academic and Student Affairs, the Associate Vice Chancellor, Student Success and Inclusive Excellence will:

  • Provide leadership, analysis, strategy, policy recommendations and guidance for CSU-wide efforts supporting student success, equitable student outcomes and social mobility.
  • Serve as a highly effective internal and external ambassador for the CSU’s commitments to access, affordability, equity, and student success.
  • Provide strategic institutional and data-driven programmatic recommendations that promote inclusive excellence and provide equitable access for historically underserved students.
  • Guide university stakeholders in cutting-edge approaches to achieving equitable student outcomes for all demographics.
  • Serve as a key member of the divisional leadership team and advise the EVC on strategies related to student success, retention, equity, and data-informed innovation.
  • Serve as primary liaison between Academic Senate of the California State University (ASCSU) and the Division of Academic and Student Affairs; attend all ASCSU meetings and share information with the Division.
  • Provide the Executive Vice Chancellor and Chancellor analytical support on faculty issues and make recommendations for resolution of issues.
  • Develop and prepare responses to Senate resolutions in collaboration with other departments within the Chancellor s Office.
  • Supervise the Chancellor s Office Academic Senate support operations including the staff and budget.
  • Systemwide committees as assigned (Academic Senate Faculty Affairs Committee)
  • Partner with other associate vice chancellors to provide regular advice to the EVC about strategies for improving the effectiveness, efficiency, and impact of the Division of Academic and Student Affairs.
  • Provide strategic support and serve as a resource to a broad array of offices across the CSU campuses, including but not limited to student success, undergraduate studies, institutional research, early assessment, and equity and inclusion.
  • In collaboration with the department of Student Affairs, Equity, and Belonging, provide leadership on the development and implementation of systemwide efforts to reconceptualize academic preparation support, providing entering students with a more robust suite of summer programming that builds academic confidence, fosters a sense of belonging, and confers academic credit before students begin their fall studies.
  • Build partnerships and meaningful collaborations with multiple constituents to advance the student equity data imperative and the use of technology to better deliver academic programs and services to achieve equitable student outcomes.
  • Provide expertise and thought partnership on known and emerging issues relevant to the retention of students, including the K-16 pipeline and the retention of underrepresented, low-income, minority, ethnically diverse, LGBTQIA+, community college transfer, and first-generation students.
  • Oversee the implementation of a cohesive and unified External Relations strategy in collaboration with Academic Senate, Advocacy and State Relations, Enrollment Management, and Alumni Relations
  • Create a system of communication with leadership at the 23 campuses, providing channels for information to move in both directions.
  • Gather, analyze, report, present and recommend to the EVC, Chancellor’s Council, and Board of Trustees, information pertaining to student success planning, and policy.
  • Oversee staff, establish a highly motivated work environment, monitor staff performance, and create opportunities for professional growth and development.
  • Provide leadership to and manage the development, launch, and maintenance of strategic and innovative projects in support of key systemwide initiatives related to the Graduation Initiative including Academic Preparation, the CSU Student Success Dashboard and Course Equity Portal, e-Advising, Affordable Learning Solutions, and High-Impact Practices.
  • Partner with Academic and Student Affairs AVCs, campus Provosts and VPs of Student Affairs to further develop accountability measures related to equity, success, and time-to-degree
  • Oversee the planning and implementation of the annual GI 2025 Symposium to take stock of the CSU’s student success and equity efforts and celebrate campus practices that have proven to further these goals.
  • Oversee the scaling of the CSU Certificate Program in Student Success Analytics for CSU campus faculty, staff and administrators, empowering campus leaders across the CSU and cross the nation to employ a more evidence-driven approach to student success.
  • Oversee the growth of partnerships with philanthropic partners across the nation to identify, pursue, and secure significant external funding opportunities in support of the Graduation Initiative 2025.
  • Lead, direct, and implement Academic and Student Affairs change management strategies to better position system and campus resources to meet student success objectives.

Qualifications

This position requires:

  • Ten or more years of increasingly responsible administrative leadership in academic affairs, student success, diversity and equity or a related area in a college, university, or educational setting, including policy development and program management.
  • Graduate degree from an accredited university required. Terminal degree highly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in interacting effectively with members of the educational community from diverse backgrounds.
  • Broad as well as substantial knowledge of student success efforts in higher education, particularly related to under-represented/underserved populations.
  • Proven track record of providing visionary, collaborative, trusted, skilled and innovative leadership with exceptional administrative, financial, and managerial skills
  • Familiarity with the dynamics of academic decision-making and policy development experience required for extensive consultation with groups of administrators and user constituents.
  • Ability to interact and negotiate with colleagues having disparate interests while adequately representing the position of the CSU.
  • Experience working with faculty groups
  • Integrity in behavior and decisions and a demonstrated commitment and specific experience in advancing equity and inclusion as strategic priorities, particularly for students.
  • Ability to problem-solve creatively, consultatively, and strategically.
  • Genuine enthusiasm for collaboratively managing the people side of change to meet organizational goals.
  • Demonstrated understanding of universities that are part of a large state system.
  • Documented competence in both written and oral communication.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and public speaking skills.
  • Ability to synthesize information effectively to formulate, analyze and advocate effective policy.
  • Historical and current knowledge of educational policies and practices in California to accurately represent context of policies and procedures of the system office.
