PURPOSE

Assist providers (physicians, nurse practitioners) and nurses (RN) in the daily management of the health care needs of patients. Take care of the routine needs of the patients and report about the health of the patients to their supervising provider and/or nurse.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

  • Understand scope of practice of LPN/CMA role and perform within parameters of job description.
  • Adhere to instructions issued by provider/nurse and perform tasks in accordance with established Rural Medical Services’ routines, methods and techniques, and in compliance with recognized policies, procedures, standards and practices and within the State Regulatory Acts.
  • Follow Standard Precautions and OSHA Guidelines; follow specific precautions (i.e. MRSA, contact, respiratory) as necessary.
  • Understand employee’s role in fire and disaster procedures.
  • Maintain an organized, neat, well-stocked station/exam room.
  • Maintain a safe, secure/private, comfortable environment for every patient.
  • Prepare and maintain a record of observations and care given; document information clearly and completely utilizing electronic health record and in a timely manner.
  • Complete all assigned tasks within scope of practice.
  • Use equipment in a safe manner.
  • Prepare and maintain equipment/instrument(s) in proper order (i.e. autoclave).
  • Correct unsafe conditions as appropriate; report all unsafe conditions to immediate supervisor.
  • Use appropriate work place behavior and adhere to dress code at all times.
  • Interact with patient(s), families and visitors in a warm, caring and courteous manner.
  • Accept constructive criticism from immediate supervisor(s) and take corrective action.
  • Demonstrate respectful relationships with supervisor(s), co-workers and other staff.
  • Measure and report vital signs: temperature, pulse, respirations, oxygen saturation (pulse oximetry) and blood pressure.
  • Collect, document and report pertinent health data (i.e. chief complaint, complete/accurate medication list, allergies, etc.).
  • Measure and report height, weight, head circumference (pediatrics) as it applies.
  • Apply active listening skills.
  • Demonstrate respect for diversity and show empathy for low-income populations and a desire to improve their health status.
  • Utilize information technology (electronic health record) appropriately to support optimal patient care, performance measurement, and to enhance communication.
  • Manage appointment schedule using established priorities, schedule patient(s) and procedures, schedule referral(s) and provide needed documentation for insurance approval.
  • Ensure effective communication by relaying provider-directed message(s)/information.
  • Assist/Accompany provider(s) during necessary exams/procedures.
  • Perform/Complete/Result/Document clinical laboratory procedures/requisitions (i.e. CLIA waived procedures) such as urinalysis, blood glucose, hematocrit, etc.
  • Perform/Complete/Document clinical procedures such as Foley catheter, in/out catheter, ECG monitor, NST monitor.
  • Assess medical record to ensure completeness and accuracy.
  • Administer prescribed medications/injections and monitor patients for adverse reactions to medications and treatments.
  • Start prescribed intravenous access (IVs) and/or fluids (normal saline/lactated ringers).
  • Obtain patient histories and medical information to extract and compile a range of data for triage (advisement, screening, referring, etc.) purposes, limited interpretation of data.
  • Regular exercise of independent judgment and initiative.
  • Provide verbal/written patient communication/education.
  • Act as translator for Spanish speaking patient(s); help with completion of data forms and assist with any other translation needs (i.e., telephone and written correspondence).
  • Participate in Migrant Outreach clinics.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION REQUIRED

Must be high school graduate, vocational school graduate, or possess high school (GED) equivalency. Successful completion of approved, accredited practical nursing program or successful completion of certified medical assistant course.

LICENSES REQUIRED

LPN - Must have current certification and registration with the Tennessee Department of Health or applied to test and receive certification and registration of licensure.

CMA – Must have current certification/valid certificate from an Association of Medical Assistants or applied to test and receive certification.

EXPERIENCE AND/OR SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Must be able to safely and successfully perform job-related functions, with or without reasonable accommodation required by federal, state, or local law
  • Must possess knowledge and understanding of current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques demonstrated by a valid course completion card
  • Must understand English and Spanish, both written and spoken.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Walking/Standing - escorting patient(s) to exam rooms, laboratory, etc.
  • Sitting - during documentation of care provided, telephone tasks, etc.
  • Lifting - assisting patient(s) onto exam table, out of wheelchair, etc.
  • Bending/Crouching/Stooping - filing tasks, stocking of exam tables, stocking of supply closet, etc.
  • Must be able to speak and write English in a legible and comprehensible manner.
  • Must be able to move about sufficiently to respond to life threatening emergencies including performing CPR and assisting with the evacuation of patient(s) during emergency situations.
  • Must be able to correctly utilize computer/keyboard and telephone operating system.

Starting pay is $16.50 per hour.

Sign-on Bonus $500

This position is Monday - Friday 8am - 4pm.
