Our DataBased+ Studio team, is seeking a Building Performance Fellow for the Summer of 2023. This role will support the studio’s research-driven focus by advancing the firm’s ability to engineer systems for a variety of projects creating designs for all kind of spaces.

dbHMS is committed to a diverse workforce and to providing a safe, accessible workplace. Most duties will be performed in an office environment. dbHMS currently operates with both hybrid and remote-only work policies. The remainder of the duties will be performed in a combination of office environment and construction/field environment which will involve trips to project sites.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, and frequently is required to walk. The work typically requires the use hands to type, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is regularly required to stand and perform work in the field. The typical week consists of five, eight-hour shifts.
This position is temporary, covering only eight to twelve weeks of summer 2023.
Position Overview
DataBased+ performs industry-leading building analysis as part of almost every project that comes through our doors. From affordable housing to education to spec office buildings to university/institutional work, DataBased+ goes beyond just designing building systems to designing a building that performs. As part of this commitment, the DataBased+ Studio of dbHMS seeks motivated graduate students to spend eight to ten weeks of their summer with us. All positions receive compensation in the form of a stipend and the opportunity to not only spend the summer in one of the most innovative and exciting building markets in the world, but also in one of the most vibrant summer cities in the world.
During the summer, our fellows not only gain exposure to the application of modeling tools in real-world development, but they also bring their own research activities to our firm and get access to our treasure trove of existing and past projects on which they can apply their work. In addition, the fellows can interact with professionals in the building analysis, system design, commissioning, and sustainability planning fields to hone and improve their ideas. At the end of the summer, fellows will provide a final report on their work from the summer and how dbHMS can add value to its clients through adoption of the ideas. With several university professors on staff, dbHMS provides the perfect environment for transitioning ideas from the classroom to the boardroom.
Ideal candidates will be actively pursuing a master’s or doctorate in building science, building modeling, data analysis, or related field, with a background in mechanical engineering. Other backgrounds will be considered pending level of knowledge and experience with advanced building systems

Essential Job Functions:
In addition to furthering their own research, the Building Performance Fellow will gain valuable industry experience by supporting Building Performance Analysts and Specialists in the modeling of building performance across a wide range of tools analyzing a variety of building performance and human-centered outcomes. Fellows will employ sound scientific principles. Fellows will have access to several experienced, licensed professionals gaining experience in:
- Analyzing building performance data and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Applying concepts of passive and active engineered systems to make recommendations about building components and design elements.
- Communicating effectively in spoken, written, and visual presentation across disciplines.
- Using industry standard and state of the art software tools to analyze the resource use of engineered building systems and their components at all scales from the system level up through and including the regional grid level, and accurately predict their impact on human health and environmental sustainability.
- Reading and understanding construction documents, floor plans, specifications, and details.

Requirements:
- Minimum Education: Enrolled in graduate program focused on building performance outcomes.
- Experience in one of the following building performance analysis software:
- Open Studio/Energy Plus,
- Grasshopper plug-in and associated programs,
- DesignBuilder,
- TRNSYS,
- TRACE 3-D, 700,
- IES.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Programs.
- A research topic or topics of interest that the candidate wants to further through the fellowship.
Additional Preferred Qualifications:
- REVIT, BIM360, or similar building information modeling software.
