CDL Training Instructor

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of the City of Girard Public Works Director, the CDL Training Instructor is a non-exempt position under FLSA which performs skilled work training and evaluating entry level drivers and preparing them to acquire a Commercial Driver’s License, ensuring they possess the skills to become a licensed commercial driver as defined by federal guidelines. This employee should possess strong communication skills as well as a strong mechanical aptitude and be in possession of a CDL of the class equivalent to the training offered.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Train student drivers on performing safety inspections relating to potential truck/trailer issues,
  • Instruct functional driving skills such as performing turns, curves, backing, etc.,
  • Evaluate designated student drivers daily to determine when they are ready to progress from the range to the road,
  • Ensure student drivers know how to perform well when driving on upgrades and downgrades including starting and stopping activities,
  • Ensure student drivers possess a basic knowledge when dealing with situations such as intersections, urban/rural sections, expressways, bridge underpasses, etc.,
  • Effectively and efficiently resolve student issues,
  • Recruit students, communicate with other agencies seeking CDL training program,
  • Work with partners to provide training opportunities,
  • Assist with design of program and curriculum,
  • Ensure that the City is in compliance with federal, state, and/or local regulations,
  • Maintain federal database and internal documents and data as related to the CDL Training program,
  • Assist as needed and during any idle time in the Public Works Department, and
  • Maintain a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner which facilitates the success of business operations representative of the City.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs other duties as deemed necessary or assigned by leadership.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Experience: Two years possession of a Class A Commercial Driver’s License, and two years of driving history in a commercial vehicle. Must be able to pass a Kansas Department of Transportation road test. Must have appropriate state certification as a CDL Instructor or able to become certified with a minimum basic certification within a year of employment.

Education: A high school diploma or GED is required. This employee must possess a Class A Commercial Driver’s License for a minimum of 2 years.

Technical Skills: Must be able to be on feet, on hard surface, for eighty percent or more of shift (i.e. Standing and walking while instructing and observing students while on the Range); basic proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite; advanced oral and written communication skills and possess strong interpersonal skills; demonstrate good judgement and discretion, self-motivated and flexible; strong problem-solving skills; leadership & commitment to continuous improvement; stress tolerance and ability to handle changing priorities; must maintain cdl status relative to the level of instruction; must maintain certification status.

Decision Making: Decision making is a factor in this position. Most decisions are reviewed by the Public Works Director.

Supervision: This employee works with occasional to direct supervision from the Public Works Director.

Financial Accountability: This employee is responsible for the safe operation of departmental equipment but does not participate in the annual budget process.

Personal Relations: Daily contact with supervisory personnel, other City departments and general public is expected. All interactions must be professional.

Working Conditions: Adverse working conditions exist. Exposure to hazardous chemicals, machinery, commercial and industrial equipment, excessive noise, heights and all types of weather conditions is expected. Subject to working irregular and extended periods and under fatigue and physical exhaustion.

Physical Requirements: Manual labor including the ability to operate commercial vehicles, is required daily within this position. Manual labor including lifting and carrying heavy objects, bending, kneeling, sitting, standing, walking, running, driving, pushing, pulling, carrying and climbing is required daily to fulfill the duties of this position. The employee may occasionally be required to lift and move more than 75 pounds and frequently lift 25 pounds.
