The Office of Communications (COMM) serves as partners to programs and scholars, helping turn ideas and research into a range of products that effectively engage new and existing audiences. We champion expert research and analysis, help scholars diversify their products, and experiment across mediums to reach audiences to help solve local, national, and global challenges. Position Location
: Hybrid preferred; remote considered: Most Brookings positions are hybrid, combining regular in-person presence at our Washington, DC, office with the option of at least two days of remote work each week. We will prioritize candidates in or willing to relocate to the DC area for hybrid work, but will also consider remote applicants. Remote work applicants may not work from the following states: Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Michigan, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Washington.

The Communications Manager manages the creation and implementation of communications plans for high-profile and cross-program initiatives at Brookings. Serves on the Office of Communications’ (COMM) Project Intake team, leading project management for assigned creative and digital efforts in collaboration with communications and research staff. Also supports institutional media and external relations as needed.

Strategic communications for institutional initiatives (60%)
  • With the Director of Strategic Communications, creates, manages, and implements high-profile and cross-program initiatives, including Brookings-wide efforts on climate change and other priorities as identified.
  • As member of COMM Project Intake team, leads project management for assigned creative and digital projects in close collaboration with communications and research staff.
  • Coordinates the creation of web, digital, and social media assets to support assigned initiatives, including producing multimedia products such as videos and podcasts and assisting with written materials and scripts as needed.
  • Coordinates with event and research staff on high-profile events and convenings related to assigned initiatives.
  • Manages efforts to track the impact of cross-program initiatives and assigned projects, helping to formulate analytics reports and highlight impact as needed.
Institutional media and external relations support (40%)
  • Supports media relations and external relations for the institution as needed, including by liaising with journalists, external stakeholders, and partners.
  • Supports efforts to highlight initiatives and policy impact undertaken by the institution.
  • Assists with talking points and background information, as requested.
  • Contributes to discussions about the development of Brookings new website, and assists with drafting, editing, and migrating content as needed.
  • Supports the coordination, development, and deployment of a variety of special projects aligned with the priorities and activities of the institution and central communications team.

Education/Experience Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience required. A minimum of three years’ experience in a communications role required. Knowledge of website content management, social media, and podcast production a plus. Experience in a public policy setting preferred but not required. Must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S.

Knowledge/Skills Requirements:

Excellent communication, organizational, management and administrative skills. Ability to effectively present and explain public policy research in written materials. Initiative, dependability, news and public policy savvy. Ability to juggle multiple projects with competing priorities simultaneously. Able to work independently, under short deadlines, and deliver in a rapidly changing, fast-paced environment.
