This position installs, maintains and repairs the sophisticated telecommunication systems (VHF, Microwave, and/or PTC) that exist across the assigned KCS rail network. This critical position ensures all assigned railroad communications systems are accurately communicating to ensure the safe and efficient movement of trains across the US KCS rail network.


Works independently and receives minimal guidance. Solves complex problems; takes a new perspective using existing solutions. Leads projects with moderate scope, risks, and resource requirements. Acts as a resource for colleagues with less experience. Develops and manages operational initiatives to deliver tactical results.


Accountabilities

  • Installs and maintains assigned wayside communication base stations (VHF, Microwave and / or PTC), Automatic Equipment Identification (AEI) readers, and
  • Maintains and repairs assigned radio signal locations for locomotive cab radios, End of Train devices (EOTs), Head of Train devices (HEDs) and repeaters (DP, EOT, RCL).
  • Assists in the support of installed camera, desktops and printers, and WIFI systems at assigned locations.
  • Assists in the support of the data network team to ensure all systems are functioning accurately.
  • Exemplifies KCS Vision, Values, and Culture in each and every interaction with team, clients, and stakeholders.

Ideal Candidate Qualifications:

Required

  • Associate degree from an accredited university or college, preferably in a job-related major field of study
  • Minimum two (2) years of relevant professional experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Valid driver's license.

Preferred

  • Possess FCC radio operator license.
  • Possess IP Network certification.
  • Experienced with RF systems support, troubleshooting, and repair.

Essential Functions

  • Ability to climb, use ladders, and use mechanical lift devices to access equipment.
  • Ability to grasp, lift, and carry objects weighing up to 60 lbs.
  • Ability to walk on uneven surfaces to access work sites.
  • Ability to work outdoors in variable weather conditions.
  • Computer literate
  • Follow safety policies and procedures and wear the required personal protective equipment
  • Ability to install, maintain and support sophisticated telecommunications systems.
  • Ability to travel via driving motorized vehicle.
  • Ability to install, complete, and test Communications systems.
  • Ability to complete routine inspections and periodic maintenance.
  • Ability to support, troubleshoot, and repair system issues.

Working Conditions

  • This position has a regular full-time schedule with a normal work week of Monday through Friday. There may work after hours or weekends.
  • On-call responsibilities are an essential function of this job. Employees must have the ability and willingness to support operations of important systems and/or processes 24 hours per day/7 days per week. On-call assignments may include after-hours, weekends and holidays
  • This position may require minimal travel up to 10% of the time.
