COORDINATOR OF MUSIC MINISTRIES-CHOIR DIRECTOR

Purpose: The purpose of the position of Coordinator of Music Ministries-Choir Director is to assist the congregation in worship, service, and outreach through the music ministries of Pana First UMC. This makes it essential for the person serving in this position to function in a way that reflects a commitment to Jesus Christ as

Savior and Lord and a dedication to a life of integrity, authenticity, and service. The Coordinator of Music

Ministries-Choir Director should view this position as a ministry rather than a job.

Supervision:

  • Direct supervision and work assignments will be provided by the Lead Pastor.
  • The Staff Parish Relations Committee (SPRC) will serve as the personnel committee and will address any concerns or grievances related to this position.
  • Evaluation of work performance will be managed by the SPRC and the Lead Pastor.

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Have excellent musical skills, including the ability to read and interpret music and to direct the various musical groups within the ministry of the church
  • Demonstrate good oral and written communication skills
  • Have the leadership skills to effectively lead other volunteer choir directors and members
  • Be a responsible member of the church staff, working in such a way that the tasks will be done with excellence and will reflect honor to God
  • Relate in a warm and friendly manner to persons making contact with the music ministries of the church
  • Demonstrate professionalism in work style and strong relationship skills
  • Maintain confidentiality in the working relationship with both volunteers and paid staff.
  • Be punctual and finish tasks in a timely manner

Work Schedule:

The work schedule will include weekly rehearsals, Sunday morning worship, and other times during each week as necessary to fulfill the job requirements.

Job Responsibilities:

1. Coordinate the music ministries of Pana First United Methodist Church

2. Select, rehearse, and direct music for Sunday morning and Special worships

3. This will include, but not limited to such weekly responsibilities:

  • selecting the praise choruses and /or hymns that align with Lead Pastor’s messaging
  • coordinating and implementing the music for current online worship efforts
  • prepare the Chancel Choir for performances 2 times monthly (Sept.-May)
  • prepare the Bell Choir for performances 1 time monthly (Sept.-May)
  • coordinate and ensure all choirs are prepared for special worships (Christmas Eve, Easter, or other community performances)
  • arranging for any special music during the summer months
  • work with A/V volunteer team to provide list of hymns (The United Methodist Hymnal) or lyrics to other praise music in a timely manner to be placed on Worship-Him (for projection)
  • arranging as needed leaders/organist/accompanist/praise band for each service
  • get music to the leaders/organist/accompanist/praise band in enough time for appropriate rehearsals, or transposing the music for the instrumentalists, if needed

4. Direct, collaborate, and schedule performances with youth Choir Director (Blue Angels)

5. Maintain the music library

6. Ensure that the organist and pianist positions are adequately staffed for all services

7. Consult with the Lead Pastor, other choir directors, accompanists, and Finance Committee in planning and monitoring the yearly music budget

8. Continually recruit potential choir members and be open to the possibility of new choirs

9. Consult with the choir, accompanists, and Lead Pastor in the selection of the cantatas for Christmas and Easter, provide the necessary rehearsals, and direct the performances of these cantatas

10. Prepare anthems for special worship services during the year such as Ash Wednesday, Lenten

Services, Maundy Thursday, Thanksgiving worship, and Christmas Eve

11. Provide musical training at choir rehearsal including, but not limited to, music reading skills, phrasing, tone quality, expression, balance, and blend

12. Collaborate with others to provide music for Vacation Bible School and the Children’s Christmas program

13. Arrange for special music at worship services when the adult choir does not sing, using the musical talents of church members, whenever possible. (June-August)

14. Coordinate with the office staff the preparation of the yearly report for the copyright license

15. Consult with the office manager and accompanists in the scheduling of routine organ and piano maintenance

16. In consultation with the pastoral staff, coordinate musical presentations by groups or individuals from outside the local church

17. Attend meetings and prepare reports as requested by the AD Board Church Council

18. Consult with the office staff in the preparation of articles for the church newsletter and press releases to the local media

19. Perform other duties as assigned by the Lead Pastor

Compensation:

The financial compensation for the Coordinator of Music Ministries and Choir Director will be established each year by the Administrative Board, through the annual church budget, based on the recommendation of the Staff

Parish Relations Committee.

Currently, this part-time position is based upon an average of a 15-hour work week. During the weeks that include preparing for Christmas and Easter special services an additional 5 hours of paid work time will be allowed. Any additional work time above or beyond will require pre-authorization by SPRC.

Pay per hour will be based upon experience and skill level of the individual hired. (Minimum of $15/Hr.)

Benefits:

This position will also include paid time off to be utilized for sick or vacation time following the initial 90-day

evaluation period. Sick time will accrue at 4 hours per month. Vacation time is awarded as two weeks annually

starting January 1st, where a ‘week’ is equal to the average 15 hours worked per week. Vacation time will be

pro-rated accordingly to hiring date. Paid time off (sick & vacation) will not be carried forward into different

calendar years. With the importance of this position for worship service we ask that vacation time off be

coordinated with Lead Pastor and limited to include a maximum of three Sundays during the calendar year.
