    • Complete the NTN registration process and schedule your test.

Upon completion of your scheduled exam, scores are automatically forwarded to The City of North Las Vegas. The City of North Las Vegas will contact candidates on the list and may invite them to participate in further stages of the selection process based on the overall scores on the exam. National Testing Network does not replace The City of North Las Vegas’s responsibility and decision-making in the testing process.


The Role

The Correction Officer works under general supervision, performs security work overseeing and directing the activities of inmates within the Community Correctional Center and during transport to other facilities, and performs related duties as required.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Performs security checks on building and inmates.

Processes intake and release of inmates.

Provides security and transportation of inmates to and from medical facilities, court and work details.

Supervises and maintains order and security during meals, Attorney Visits and recreation of inmates.

Conduct random or selective searches of visitors, inmates, and inmate housing areas for contraband.

Remain alert to possible dangerous or emergency situations taking preventative measures; prevent inmate confrontation, breaks up inmate altercations.

Conducts inventory checks on departmental equipment and inmate property.

Prepares concise and accurate reports and maintains accurate records and files.

Inspect facility for cleanliness and disrepair, ordering repair work as necessary; inventory, tools, and equipment for work details.

Read and write reports and other documents.

May assist in training new personnel as needed.

May serve warrants, summons and subpoenas as directed.

Performs other related duties as required.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent

Minimum age of 21 at time of application

U.S. Citizen

Equivalency: Any combination of education, training, and experience which produces knowledge, skills and abilities required for the job and related to the essential functions of the position.


Licenses and Certifications:

Must possess a valid state driver's license and maintain satisfactory motor vehicle record and ability to obtain appropriate Nevada state driver’s license within required time frame.

Must be able to obtain appropriate POST CAT 3 Certification within established time period.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Character above reproach. Must be able to work in a security type environment and manage stressful and potentially dangerous/difficult inmate contact situations.

Visual Acuity: Vision 20/20 in best eye and not worse than 20/30 in worse eye with/without correction. If correction is necessary, uncorrected vision no worse than 20/100 in each eye.

Color Vision: Must recognize 4/6 plates on titmus color vision test.

Hearing: Average hearing 1000/2000/3000 HZ must not exceed 25db. No single reading to exceed 35db at 500/1000/2000/3000/4000HZ. A hearing aid can be accepted with a letter from an audiologist indicating proper fit and level of hearing correction in both ears.

Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Read and interpret complex information.

Defend self and others from combatant individuals.

Qualify with department-approved weapons.

Give and comprehend verbal and written instructions.

Perform manual tasks associated with operating the Correctional Center.

While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands and communicate clearly.

Only those applicants who meet the qualifications and who have submitted required documentation and testing will be invited to continue in the hiring process as needed.

Physical Agility Testing - is REQUIRED and will be administered by appointment only.

Nevada Post Fitness Testing Standards are as follows:

  • Vertical Jump 15 inches
  • Agility Run 20.4 seconds
  • Push-Ups 20 (no time limit)
  • 300 Meter Run 74 seconds
  • 1.5 mile Run 17:37

Background Investigation Process:

  • Intensive background check which may include polygraph/CVSA examination
  • Medical/drug screen exam
  • Psychological evaluation
