Counselor in Training Coordinator for Summer Sailing Camps Job at Mystic Seaport Museum Inc
Mystic Seaport Museum is seeking a Counselor in Training (CIT) Coordinator for our day and overnight summer sailing camps. This position is in charge of mentoring 10-15 CITs ages 14-17 each week and developing their leadership, teaching, and sailing skills. The CIT Coordinator will lead a variety of teambuilding activities and teach CITs the foundational skills needed to become a sailing counselor. Overnight campers, staff, and CITs sleep aboard an historic full-rigged ship, the Joseph Conrad, learn to sail Dyer Dhows, and participate in fun activities in the evenings, including a Planetarium show, climbing the rigging, and more. Day campers and CITs arrive and depart each day and spend most of their time on the water. This position requires great leadership, communication, and teamwork skills and the ability to create a fun and productive environment for the CITs. The CIT Coordinator does not need to be a sailing instructor but it will be helpful for a candidate to have a basic understanding of sailing. Camp sessions run weekly from Sunday afternoon to Friday afternoon. The CIT Coordinator works Sunday-Friday as part of the camp staff. Responsibilities
- Lead by example as a role model who sets the tone for positive youth development
- Lead weekly teambuilding and leadership trainings for the CITs
- Meet with and mentor each CIT throughout the week and conduct daily check-in meetings
- Train CITs on their responsibilities and role during camp
- Help facilitate communications between staff and CITs
- Help CITs plan for their activities, lessons, and transition time games
- Help ensure that all State camp licensing and safety protocols are followed
- Communicate CIT’s needs and issues to camp director
- Assist with camp activities as needed
- Adhere to all camp safety guidelines
