General Position Description: The Assistant Program Manager is responsible for guiding and supervising the work of Direct Support Professionals (DSP) and Behavior Specialists, across multiple programs within the Deaf & Hard of Hearing Department, ensuring that agency policies and procedures are implemented correctly and that the consumers served live valued and high-quality lives.

Broad Areas of Responsibility: Participating in agency activities, serving on committees, and communicating the agency’s values and principles to others; assisting in recruiting, selecting, and supporting Direct Support Professionals; providing training and mentoring to new and existing employees; guiding and supervising the work of Direct Support Professionals by setting clear expectations and monitoring progress, providing feedback regarding performance evaluations; recognizing and valuing the skills and input of employees; implementation of creative scheduling and accountability.

Minimal Qualifications

  • High school degree or equivalent
  • Management training or supervisory experience.
  • 3 years of experience in providing direct support to recipients of community human services
  • Exhibits leadership skills
  • Demonstrates excellence in providing Direct Support to consumers served
  • Good computer skills
  • Valid driver’s license, insured vehicle and favorable driving record
  • Favorable DCYF clearance and fingerprint results
  • Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL)
  • Contributes to a culturally affirmative and inclusive professional environment

Desired Qualifications

  • A 2-year degree or certificate in a human services field or equivalent experience
  • 5 years of direct support experience in community human services

Deaf & Hard of Hearing Specialty: Demonstrates necessary American Sign Language (ASL) skills, cultural sensitivity, and awareness.

A. Demonstrates ability to effectively communicate in ASL.

B. Participates in agency’s ASL internal assessment process or other evaluation of ASL Skills (e.g., American Sign Language Proficiency Interview, etc.).

C. Adheres to plan for improvement with ASL skills when applicable.

D. Attends and actively participates in trainings, classes, and meetings offered by the agency’s ASL Program and/or DHOH Department.

E. Demonstrates sensitivity and support of Deaf Culture.

F. Promotes necessary steps for full language accessibility in all settings and environments.

G. Demonstrates skill and knowledge of assistive equipment, technology, and other resources for promoting accessibility.

H. Demonstrates an understanding of working with an ASL Interpreter and recognizing situations and circumstances when one is needed.

I. Model, mentor, and support others learning ASL and Deaf Culture within the agency.
