Position: Deckhand

Reports to: Manager of Rescue Services

Direct Reports: None

Exempt Status: On call, non-exempt

This position is paid at a flat rate of $105.00 per response. This position is an on call, as needed position. Candidates will be able to work within the parameters of their availability.

Primary Accountability –

We are looking for a fit deckhand with great active listening skills and the ability to work under pressure. The deckhand's responsibilities include loading and unloading cargo or luggage, relaying important information to the crew, maintaining ship equipment, assisting with watchkeeping duties, and ensuring the general upkeep of the vessel. To be successful as a deckhand, you should be able to follow orders and obey all environmental and government regulations. Top candidates are usually strong and physically fit, and able to carry out instructions while observing the environment around them.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

• Greasing and cleaning machinery.
• Moving heavy objects around.
• Using various ropes, knots and radio and navigational equipment.
• Assisting during emergencies and effectively using safety equipment.
• Performing general maintenance duties like painting, sweeping and mopping.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

• High School diploma or equivalent (required)
• Firm knowledge of marine craft communication, signaling and navigation systems
• Experience working on a 20ft or larger work boat
• Prior experience with marine booming operations preferred
• Knowledge of maritime safety

COMPETENCIES:

• Knowledge of equipment, environmental regulations/statutes, safety and compliance

(strongly preferred)

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Excellent hand-eye coordination

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Always requires near visual acuity, speaking and listening
• Frequently requires sitting, standing, walking, grasping and reaching
• May occasionally require lifting up to 50 lbs., pulling and/or pushing and carrying
• Physical fitness and strength
• Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate work boat
• Sitting/Standing for extended periods of time.
• Physically able to participate in training sessions, presentations, and meetings.
• Overtime may be required to meet project deadlines.
• Ability to perform under all weather conditions while on/around the boat
