The Opportunity:
Central to Urban’s mission is fostering a truly inclusive community that ensures ongoing relevance to a changing world. The Office of Communications for the Urban Institute has a full in-house communications group to ensure that our findings reach a wide range of audiences. Our internal creative team provides many services, including interactive and print design, branding, data visualization, photography, video, and more.
We seek a talented graphic designer to join our growing team. Urban is looking for a multi-disciplinary creative communicator with a passion for making public policy understandable and for helping changemakers make an impact with visually stunning materials.
What You’ll Do:
Our designers play a crucial role in making Urban’s research more accessible and impactful. The designer works closely with researchers, authors, editors, data visualization designers, and project managers to determine how best to present key findings. They’re responsible for the look and feel of Urban’s reports, brochures, annual reports, event materials, and more. Our designers are also responsible for visual content such as infographics, data visualization, editorial illustration, and photography that enhance Urban’s publications.
Responsibilities
  • Design core Urban publications such as research reports, briefs, and factsheets.
  • Work with researchers and authors to develop infographics, illustrated explainers, and other forms of data visualization
  • Present creative solutions to colleagues via design reviews. Listen to and incorporate feedback from key stakeholders.
  • Support in-person events including collateral and wayfinding
  • Research and select compelling photography and illustration to enhance Urban products.
  • Refine and expand the Urban Institute’s visual brand through a range of publications and visual content
  • Assist project managers with planning, scheduling, estimates, and workflow refinements.
  • See projects through from start to launch, with guidance from senior designers and Design Director.
Who You Are:
The successful candidate will have:
  • Bachelor's degree in visual communications, graphic design, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 3-6 years of professional experience with a strong design portfolio
  • Advanced knowledge of Adobe InDesign and proficiency with Adobe Illustrator and Figma interface tool
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and presentation skills and a background
  • Proven abilities in communicating with teams, presenting creative concepts, and listening to and incorporating feedback.
  • Attention to detail, and an eye for quality
  • Capacity to manage multiple projects and deadlines
Preferred Knowledge:
  • Aptitude and interest in data visualization and informational graphics. Data literacy and experience with Microsoft Excel and/or other data tools (DataWrapper, D3, Tableau, etc).
  • Interest in exploring and mastering new tools and techniques
  • Experience working on publications with editors and authors
  • Familiarity with the print process, including file setup and working with printers
  • Working knowledge of general accessibility concerns, including PDF optimization
