Definition

This is skilled work in digital printing and the operation of bindery equipment. An employee in this classification uses digital production copiers, computer, publishing software, and bindery equipment to develop and print a wide variety of pamphlets, brochures, forms, newsletters and other publications. An employee in this classification works under general supervision with independent responsibility for publication quality, printing deadlines, and equipment care and maintenance.

Characteristic Work

  • Uses a computer and software to design publications in a variety of formats
  • Completes a desktop publishing request from rough draft materials
  • Calculates space for text and decides on font style and point size
  • Interface with Foreman, designer and/or the requestor to ensure a complete understanding of the request. Request and output digital files for use in the completion of request
  • Operates digital production copiers and assists others in assembling printing jobs using collating, punching, stapling, binding, folding, etc.
  • Maintains records of work performed, materials used, and time involved to complete a job
  • Assists other personnel in the department
  • Utilizes written and oral communication skills in dealing with employees and public
  • Promotes good public relations by personal appearance, attitude and conversation
  • Attends meetings and in-services as required
  • Maintains respect at all times for confidential information
  • Respond to routine questions and requests in an appropriate manner
  • Promote good safety practices and procedures
  • Performs related work as required

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or GED

  • Minimum of one (1) year paid experience in digital production copiers and printing department

  • Knowledge of all equipment and operations relevant to assignment, i.e., computer, digital production copiers, finishing equipment such as collator, stapler, cutter, punch and bind machine, and digital equipment for plate making and photography
  • Knowledge of the proper care and storage of chemicals, e.g. OSHA/PERRAC Training
  • Some knowledge of modern office practices and procedures
  • Ability to perform typing and proofreading at a high skill level
  • Ability to type at a rate to be determined at the time of examination
  • Ability to produce high quality work and to adhere to schedules
  • Ability to follow written or verbal instructions
  • Ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively both orally and in writing
  • Ability to work effectively with others
  • Ability to organize job duties and problem solve
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt to changing situations
  • Ability to complete a desktop publishing request from rough draft material

Competitive Examination Process

The selection process will consist of a typing test and a competitive examination with credit for education and experience. Candidates must achieve a minimum speed of 25 correct words per minute on the typing test in order to participate in the competitive examination. A passing score must be obtained on the competitive examination in order to receive credit for education and experience. TEST WEIGHTS: Competitive Examination 70%, Education 20%, Experience 10%.

Candidates must meet the qualifications and requirements listed in the announcement at the time of examination and at the time of appointment.

VETERANS: A veteran of the Armed Forces of the United States, honorably discharged from active duty, desiring a bonus of 5 points added to his/her passing grade, must submit proof of discharge in the form of a DD-214 with application.

NOTE: The competitive examination may be suspended if shown to be impractical because of an insufficient number of qualified candidates. The candidates will then be ranked in a standard manner based on 70% for qualifying, 20% for education, and 10% for experience.

Since this examination is posted on a combined basis, two separate eligibility lists will be generated with promotional candidates considered before open candidates.
