SULAM, Temple Sinai of Roslyn's hub for youth and teen engagement, has dozens of ways for teens to get involved!

More than 130 teens join us annually to enhance their Jewish education, to repair the world, to feel connected and to spend time with one another in a safe and welcoming environment.

Our programs run the gamut from cooking classes to Fantasy Football leagues, from leadership and advocacy training to volunteering and just about everything in between. In addition to our weekly or monthly programs, we have amazing trips and single-day events.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Director of Youth and Teen Engagement is a member of Temple Sinai’s professional staff and is responsible for advancing Temple Sinai’s mission to engage all TSR teens and youth in a lifelong relationship with Reform Judaism and Jewish values.

Our programs appeal to and engage teens with diverse interests, backgrounds and Jewish knowledge. The Director of Youth and Teen Engagement will collaborate with other members of the professional staff, clergy and lay leadership to design, implement, evaluate and re-design (as necessary), a state-of-the-art program that maximizes supportive youth and teen engagement. The Director of Youth and Teen Engagement will be responsible for increasing and enriching youth engagement at Temple Sinai by recruiting youth from within our own membership and broadening the visibility of our programs out in the community.

This position reports to the Associate Rabbi.

*** Appropriate Candidates would also be eligible for the Clasp Fellowship. Engaging families and supporting recruitment for URJ camps, and planning programming that shares the camp voice with the whole congregation. ***

QUALIFICATIONS:

● BA required; MA in Education or Jewish Education a plus.

● A minimum of 2 years of previous leadership experience (including teaching, camp staff, youth group advisor, etc.)

● A team player who enjoys collaborating and working with others.

● Keen interpersonal skills, outgoing personality; allowing for contact and connection with a full range of synagogue youth, volunteers, and staff.

● Experience working with young people through religious school teaching, Jewish camp experience, or other informal Jewish educational programs.

● Strong organizational, project management and leadership skills.

● Knowledge of Reform Judaism including prayers, basic Hebrew, Jewish rituals and holidays.

● Self-starter, who can work independently and has a drive to do their best.

● Ability to manage and administer annual departmental budget and all administrative tasks.

● Strong social media expertise; Computer proficiency in database, word processing, and spreadsheet applications

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

8th – 12th Grade

● Coordinate and oversee Temple Sinai’s rich and varied teen programming. To learn more about our programs, explore our website: https://www.mysinai.org/learn/youthteenengagement

● Mentor and support the SORTY youth group board

● Plan all logistics around various trips and travel, including the RAC L’Taken Seminar in Washington, DC, an annual February break tikkun olam trip, a NYC Overnight.

● Recruit and connect with teens and their parents through all communication channels.

● Develop flyers and other written materials to connect with teens and their families.

4th – 7th Grade

● Plan and teach lessons for 7th grade Monday evening class, under the supervision of the Director of Education.

● Oversee experiential educational programming during Religious School hours with youth in 4th – 6th grade.

● Plan and coordinate our JORTY, Rosh Hodesh, JCrew, and Machane Sinai youth programming for K – 6th grade.

● Build a relational foundation with children with the aim of post B’nei Mitzvah retention.

LEADERSHIP & CULTIVATING PARTNERSHIPS:

● Supervise our part-time Youth Advisor and our multiple part-time Teen Educators in their planning, teaching, and relationship-building with teens and families.

● Attend weekly staff meetings and serve as staff liaison during youth committee meetings and monthly board meetings.

● Network with other youth professionals at the Jewish Education Project, URJ Youth Conference, and other Reform Movement webinars.

● Promote and recruit for URJ Summer Camps, Israel programs, and NFTY events.

● Develop relationships with college students through mailings, visits, reunions, and other gatherings.

● Provide new venues and opportunities for our youth to engage in social action, worship, and learning, in connection with the Temple leadership.

● Develop the High Holy Day youth programs for children of all ages.

● Plan and execute community-wide Purim Carnival with the support of SORTY, youth committee, lay leadership and professional staff.

● Evening, weekend and holiday work throughout the academic year is a requirement of the position.
