Core Programs:

Teaching Love & Compassion (TLC)™

Created by spcaLA in 1994, TLC is an animal-assisted education program for underserved youth exposed to high levels of violence in their homes or communities. Combining group time and positive reinforcement-based interactions with animals, participants explore topics such as empathy, conflict resolution, teamwork, anger identification, animal behavior, the cycle of violence, healthy communities, and anti-bias.

Youth Diversion Program (YDP)

spcaLA launched the Diversion Program in 2011, as a resource for juvenile justice professionals as they develop diversion plans for youth, especially in cases involving or linked to animal cruelty. Through hands-on positive reinforcement training with shelter dogs and a series of guided activities focused on conflict resolution, proper animal treatment, and healthy coping strategies, students are supported in practicing patience and empathy for both people and animals. The program is modeled after spcaLA’s Teaching Love and Compassion (TLC)™ program, which has been offered in schools and community-based settings since 1994.

Animal Safety Net (ASN)™

Since 1998, spcaLA’s ASN Pet Housing Program has been offering free, temporary housing for the pets of intimate partner/domestic violence survivors who cannot take their pets into shelter with them. As few treatment centers have the resources to house pets, ASN Pet Housing has since expanded to assist those experiencing temporary homelessness, as well as those in treatment for substance use and mental health disorders.

In 2017, we launched ASN Youth and Families, in which spcaLA offers workshops for DV-impacted youth, parents/caregivers, and families. We offer the program in partnership with domestic violence agencies who host the program at their emergency shelter, transitional shelter, or support group locations. With a focus on communication, compassion, and force-free positive reinforcement, the curriculum supports healthy relationship building and includes hands-on dog training with shelter dogs from spcaLA’s Pet Adoption Centers. We look to expand or reach by offering this program throughout Los Angeles County.

Other community engagement programs include pet care patch workshops, summer camp, classroom presentations, and an in-school Humane Education elective program.
