NDDOT Starting Salary: $4,675 / month

Summary of Work

At the North Dakota Department of Transportation, we owe our success to our people and processes. An Engineering Technician in our Bismarck District is the supportive force and an integral team member administering construction contracts and inspecting construction and construction materials. The ideal person for this position will be a problem solver with excellent communication skills and impeccable attention to detail. They will have knowledge of NDDOT standard specifications along with experience performing construction inspection, surveying and/or materials testing. The ability to multitask and work independently is essential to the position.

Construction Inspection

  • Measure and compute installed quantities, plant scale checks, construction signing inspection, grading inspection, including pipe, sub cut and embankment, steel placement and cement cutoffs. Inspection of asphalt plant, recycled concrete, lighting and signing, aggregate base and guardrail.

Construction Survey

  • Slope staking, blue topping, cross sectioning, setting construction points, running line (tangent and curves), running, and adjusting benchmarks, computing curve data, loading survey books and adjusting survey instruments, preliminary survey, locating manholes, targets, property corners, electrical outlets and gas valves.

Construction Materials

  • Perform washed analysis of aggregate, proctor testing, compaction testing, concrete testing, (water, air, and slump tests) and testing aggregate mixes for gradation analysis.

Office activities and Winter Assignments

  • Prepare materials spreadsheets, construction force account, project quantity books.
  • Keep daily project diaries, inspection reports and pay item quantities.
  • Perform preliminary surveys, assist project engineer with final project records and bridge inspection program.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires an Associate Degree in Engineering Technology and a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or greater.
  • Four years of related work experience may substitute for the Associate degree.
  • Requires a class D drivers license.
  • Work after hours, on weekends, and holidays is required.

Employment of the selected candidate will be contingent on satisfactorily completing the interview process and the required drug test, medical screening, reference check and driving records check.
