Position Summary

The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University located in Palisades, New York, is seeking a Financial Analyst for a full-time opportunity. The Financial Analyst will provide support to Senior Management in carrying out financial and accounting responsibilities of the Observatory's Office of Marine Operations (OMO). Will prepare the departmental fiscal year budget projections under the direction of the Financial Administrator. Assist with annual proposal process and budgets. Perform account(s) analysis including: budgets, variances, and current financial transactions. Preparation of monthly/yearly financial reporting providing detail transactions versus budget; reconciliations to the general account by award. The Financial Analyst will use the University's accounting systems, databases and spreadsheets for reporting and summarizing the financial activities of the department. Assist and/or develop solutions to ad-hoc analytical and reporting requests.

Responsibilities

  • Provide analytical support. Prepare monthly financial reporting for each award and distribute to various Principle Investigators. Detail tracking of monthly activity to ensure proper accounting transactions. Investigate and resolve any discrepancies, prepare and gather all required documentation for corrective action within a timely manner. Monitor account/award dates and implement pre-award spending, extensions or close outs. Assist in preparation of cost transfers between various operating and award account(s). Assist in account/award(s) set-ups and Grant reporting requirements. Provide support as needed to Senior Staff members.
  • Prepare departmental fiscal year budget projections and developing forecasts of ICR. Enter budgets and track in the budget tool. Provide support in the preparation/review and submission of awards to L-DEO’s Grant and Contracts. Will assist with submission of awards, into the Grantor’s electronic awarding systems and CU’s internal tracking system. Inspect/monitor commitment activity. Coordinate the tracking and coding of purchases by OMO to ensure procedures are correct and appropriate. Provide support for U.S. and Foreign agents’ statements.
  • Department liaison for labor/payroll distribution and effort reporting. Monitor the payroll suspense account. Prepare correspondence as needed within the department. Assist in the reviews of financial and internal controls to determine whether such controls are adequate to meet the University objectives. Create and maintain a master list of account(s) as they map to the awards for distribution to the Principle Investigators.
  • Other responsibilities include assistance to the Financial Administrator. May need to process various Accounts Payable paperwork. Maintain award files. Perform other accounting, financial, or administrative tasks as may be required.
  • Independent judgement required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance or related field or it's equivalent with 2-4 years of related experience.
  • Ability to multi-task and must be a team player.
  • Must be skilled in: MS Word, Excel, verbal and written communications.
