SPECIAL NOTICE: Applicants hired as a Firemedic with the City of Saraland must pass the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) before entry into recruit school in order to maintain employment as a Firemedic.

Applicants currently certified as a Firefighter in the State of Alabama (through Alabama Fire College) or who have passed the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) at a CPAT testing facility within the past year, should scan and electronically attach proof of current certification for consideration.

EXAMINATION: IMPORTANT NOTICE TO APPLICANTS. READ CAREFULLY. No written or oral examination will be required. Applicants will be scored on the basis of an evaluation of their education, training, experience and personal qualifications as outlined by the candidates' sworn statements in their application, upon corroborative evidence obtained by investigation and the applicants' responses to the job-specific Supplemental Questions. Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Graduation from a standard senior high school, or the successful completion of the General Educational Development (GED) test, and completion of emergency medical technician paramedic coursework; or a combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must possess a valid license as a credentialed Paramedic in the state of residence and must be eligible for reciprocity from the State of Alabama Division of Emergency Medical Services if not licensed by this Agency and must have current Board Certification from the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians. Must obtain within the first year of employment certification as a Firefighter in the State of Alabama. Must possess a valid driver's license from state of residence.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE WORK: Thorough knowledge of assessment and proper treatment of major medical and traumatic emergencies including but not limited to recognition and management of such emergencies under the direction of a medical control physician; thorough knowledge of essential and related mobile equipment and the ability to utilize such equipment in performance of emergency services; good knowledge of firefighting skills and ability to take direction from fire suppression officers; ability to perform emergency services with calm and reasoned judgment while under stress; ability to interpret vital signs and relay such to the physician for instructions; ability to properly follow directions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.

Description

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Any one position may not include all of the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all tasks which may be found in positions of this class.) Recognizes and manages life threatening emergencies; provides pre-hospital advanced and basic life support, utilizing both invasive and non-invasive techniques, to acutely ill or traumatized patients both on the scene and while in route to the hospital; establishes rapport with the patient and others to decrease incident stress; coordinates efforts with those of other agencies to maximize the efficiency of patient care as well as the care of significant others that may be involved; assess patient response to therapy and, in consultation with medical control, alters therapy accordingly; in the case of communication failure may exercise personal judgment in the application of specific official medical protocol established by the medical control physicians; performs rescue and extrication functions utilizing rescue and extrication equipment; when assigned to fire company performs duties at scene of fire such as laying, connecting and operating hose streams, using self contained breathing apparatus to advance into burning structures as directed; raises and climbs ladders and does salvage work as required at the scene; cleans fire department facilities as needed, cleans and cares for equipment; participates in training; completes required reports; maintains medical supply inventory on vehicles and equipment; assists in the management of controlled substances; performs related work as required.

Important Information

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK: An employee in this class is responsible for working as an emergency medical team member on an advanced life support fire rescue company. The Firemedic will be periodically rotated to an advanced life support engine company where service will be in a dual role capacity as Firefighter and Paramedic. Work both at the station and at the emergency scene will be under the general direction of a Fire Service Captain.

MEDICAL EXAMINATION: Eligibles selected for appointment must meet the established medical and physical standards for the class of work. The medical examination must be by one of the physicians designated by the Personnel Board. Appointees must bear the cost of the examination.

The Mobile County Personnel Department reserves the right to limit the number of applicants summoned for interview. In such instances, a preliminary appraisal of qualifications, as indicated by the completed application, will be utilized as a guide in the selection of candidates to be summoned.

A "Practice Test Seminar" is held in the Personnel Department Office, 1809 Government Street, Mobile, Alabama, at 9:00 a.m. on the third Wednesday of every month. The purpose of these seminars is to acquaint applicants or interested citizens with design format and procedures utilized by the department in its administration of written test selection devices. Inasmuch as testing facilities are limited, the seminars will be on a first come, first served basis, as long as space remains available.
