Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Remote Sensing, GIS or similar science/geography field and four years of experience or Master's degree and 2 years of related experiences
  • Proficiency in GIS/Remote Sensing principles, software, and analysis
  • Experience consuming web-based mapping and GIS services
  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written) and a strong commitment to provide superior support to the polar science community
  • Ability to manage and delegate student projects and workload

Preferred:

  • 2+ years of experience in remote sensing, imagery analysis, and/or photogrammetry
  • Previous customer service experience
  • Expertise in project management
  • Exposure to a programming language or command line interface
  • Ability to create cartographic products for data visualization
  • Experience managing and publishing web-based mapping and GIS services
  • Openness to 4-8 weeks of annual travel with the potential to travel to remote environments

User Services Geospatial Support Specialist

Description:
The User Services Geospatial Support Specialist will be responsible for managing science project support, coordinating data requests, and providing geospatial expertise for our core users. In addition to overseeing undergraduate or graduate research assistants, the applicant is expected to perform GIS and Remote Sensing analysis per project requests. The successful candidate must be able to multi-task and work on a variety of GIS/Remote Sensing projects both independently and in collaboration with a variety of users ranging from science teams to logistics groups.

Essential Functions:

  • (30%) Manage incoming requests for geospatial data and maintain timely communication with PGC Users
  • (20%) Execute image processing workflows and data manipulation, create cartographic products, and coordinate data deliveries
  • (20%) Assist PGC staff with ongoing organizational projects and initiatives
  • (15%) Mentor and help supervise graduate and undergraduate students
  • (15%) Contribute to PGC Engagement activities

No formal supervisory functions.

The Polar Geospatial Center (PGC) is a part of the School of Earth & Environmental Sciences in the College of Science & Engineering. PGC provides geospatial support, mapping, and GIS/remote sensing solutions to researchers and logistics teams in the polar science community and worldwide. We collaborate with scientists to complete their research goals in a safe, timely, and efficient manner by providing a service which most groups do not have the resources or expertise to complete. Our goal is to introduce new, state-of-the-art techniques from the geospatial field to effectively solve problems in the least mapped places on Earth. PGC is supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, NASA, the US Forest Service, and the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency. https://www.pgc.umn.edu/
