Groundskeeper/Laborer

SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Building and Grounds Supervisor, the Groundsman/Laborer maintains and cares for the grounds of the Hospital property. Keeps all areas of the grounds, garage and storage areas assigned to the Grounds Dept. in a clean and safe manner.

Assists with demolition work as needed Assists tradesmen as needed, electricians, plumbers and carpenters Unloads construction materials when orders arrive. Transports materials to job sites. Removes debris from job sites as needed.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Responds to emergency situations as required Performs Preventative Maintenance as required on grounds equipment Prepares lawns for seeding by raking, adding fertilizer or other chemicals; plant seeds, bulbs and shrubbery. Prunes trees and trims hedges; weeds flowerbeds. Also performs all general landscaping maintenance, such as, but not limited to bed stripping and mulching.

Shovels, sweeps and removes debris and/or snow from doorways, stairways, and walkways; plows snow from driveways and parking lots and spreads sand as required to prevent slipping; sweeps parking lots, parking garages and driveways.

Delivers and picks up items for Hospital Related functions both on and off Hospital Campus; picks up trash containers and transports them to the required disposal areas.

Moves any recycling containers about the campus for disposal as required and returns the empties to their proper assigned areas

Cleans, paints, and performs repairs to equipment such as lawnmowers, sanders and plows. Works in a neat, professional manner recognizing the safety and health of themselves and other employees and patients.

Is aware of emergency policies and procedures as outlined in the Maintenance Policy and Procedures Manual. Does minor integral general maintenance repairs of the outer buildings, such as clogged toilets and replaces light bulbs. Performs other related duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS: High School GED, or Vocational School Graduate. 1 – 3 Months “ON-THE-JOB” training

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing 25 to 100 pounds while climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, standing and crawling.

WORKING CONDITIONS Works both inside and outside and in all types of weather conditions. Ability to shovel snow during weather emergency with grounds crew team, as well as other duties as assigned.
