Job Summary and Responsibilities/Duties

Job Summary
Supports the operation of the center by performing food service and janitorial services. This is a full-time position.

Position Specific Duties

  • Assembles, prepares and serves food for meal service.
  • Follows USDA regulations and safe sanitation practices.
  • Maintains a clean and sanitary kitchen.
  • Washes dishes.
  • Orders condiments and other foods as needed from central kitchen.
  • Maintains paperwork, as needed.
General Duties
  • Reports suspected child abuse in accordance with Oregon Statute and Head Start procedures.
  • Attends training sessions and participates in training opportunities.
  • Promotes and encourages parent involvement.
  • Works as a team with other staff in providing services to children and families.
  • Maintains the confidentiality of highly sensitive information.
  • Interacts with children, families and community members in a supportive and professional manner.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Minimum and Desired Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • One year of experience working in food preparation
  • Ability to carry out oral and written directions, read, write and speak at a level sufficient to fulfill the duties to be performed for the position described
  • Ability to lift 25 pounds on a daily basis
Desired Qualifications
  • Bilingual skills: oral and written fluency in English with fluency also in Spanish, Russian or another language that meets community/department's needs.

Additional Qualifications


  • Enrollment in the Oregon Central Background Registry required prior to beginning of employment and must be maintained throughout employment
  • Post-offer fitness for duty evaluation & TB Screening (Must be obtained within 30 days of hire date)
  • Food Handler's Card (Must be obtained within 30 days of hire and must maintain throughout employment)
  • Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse & Neglect (training must be completed within 60 days of hire date)
  • Introduction to Child Care Health and Safety Training (training must be completed within 60 days of hire date)

  • Knowledge of or ability to establish working relationships with staff
  • High performance through creativity, positive spirit, and multi-tasking
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse groups of people
  • High personal integrity and sound professional ethics

Working Conditions
Works assigned schedule, and exhibits regular and predictable attendance. Work is sometimes performed in an emotional and stressful environment.
