Summary of the Hospice Aide CNA Position:

  • The Hospice Aide is responsible for providing direct patient care under the direction of the Clinical Services Manager or designee and the supervision of a Registered Nurse. Assures consistent, appropriate, and cost-effective care by actively assisting in managing the patient/family’s needs, company policy compliance, and HSI’s financial objectives.
  • We visit our patients wherever they may located, whether it be in their homes, long-term care facilities, nursing homes, hospitals, etc. As a result, driving and reliable transportation are requirements of the position.
  • Full-Time Non-Exempt Position.
  • 40 Hours Weekly, Monday-Friday daytime shift. The usual shift is 8:30 AM-5:00 PM, but some of our hospice aides like to start earlier. For example, some hospice aides start at 7am and then work an 8 hour day from there.
  • The position is based out of our Marion, IL office primarily would provide service to patients located in the following counties: Jefferson, Hamilton, White, Saline, Gallatin, Hardin, Pope, Massac, and east of I-57 in Franklin, Williamson, and Johnson counties.

Position Requirements for the Hospice Aide CNA Position:

a. Education

1. High school graduate or GED.

2. Successful completion of Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) course and current Illinois Certification.

b. Experience

1. One (1) year experience in hospice/home health preferred.

2. Two (2) years of CNA experience in hospital, long-term care, or home health setting required.

c. Other Qualifications

1. Excellent organizational and interpersonal relationship skills.

2. Reliable means of transportation.

Physical Requirements: Performs repetitive tasks. Physical tasks including bathing, transferring, lifting, and turning of patients in the home or home-like setting. Prolonged periods of sitting at times. Exerts up to 100 lbs of force occasionally, and /or up to 50 lbs frequently and/or 20 lbs constantly. Requires physical flexibility of bending at knee and squat-bend. The Hospice Aide manages stress appropriately, makes decisions under pressure, handles multiple priorities, works with an Interdisciplinary Team, and manages anger/fear/hostility/violence of others appropriately. This position requires clarity of vision >20 inches and <20 feet, hears alarms/ telephone/ tape recorder.

Working Conditions: The Hospice Aide spends approximately 10% his/her time in an air-conditioned environment with varying exposure to excessive humidity and noise. The remaining 90% of his/her time is spent in an automobile or patient home, which may or may not have heat/air conditioning. The position has potential for exposure to malodorous, infectious body fluids from patients, animal pet hair, allergens in the home environment, some exposure to noxious smells from cleansing agents, and exposure to communicable diseases and traffic.

Essential Functions of the Hospice Aide CNA Position:

1.) Adheres to policies and procedures in compliance with all state and federal regulations.

2.) Observes and reports changes in the patient status and the care or service provided to the nurse and IDT.

3.) Provides evidence of basic clinical skills including but not limited to: blood pressure, temperature, pulse, and respiration; and safe techniques in bathing, transferring, lifting, turning, positioning and grooming patients.

4.) Displays knowledge of basic elements of body functioning related to patient hospice diagnosis and reports changes in body function to Nurse/Case Manager.

5.) Communication skills, including the ability to read, write and verbally report clinical information to patients, care givers, and other hospice staff.

6.) Recognizes and uses basic infection control procedures.

7.) Reinforces patient and family infection control education provided by the nurse.

8.) Completes 12 hours on in-service training during each 12 month period. Ensures required assigned education is finished in the specified time.

9.) Maintains a clean, safe and healthy environment for patients.

10.) Builds relationships and collaborates effectively with internal and external customers.

11.) Recognizes emergencies and has knowledge of emergency procedures and their application.

12.) Displays knowledge of and adherence to the hospice aide plan of care developed for each patient by the Nurse/Case Manager.

13.) Notifies the Nurse/Case Manager of requested changes by patient/family to ensure plan of care accuracy.

14.) Reports any challenges or conflicts with any patient/family/customer to the Clinical Services Manager, Patient Care Supervisor or Nurse/Case Manager.

15.) Demonstrates the ability to embrace change, manage stress, and maintain a positive attitude.

16.) Demonstrates the ability to work cooperatively with others in a team environment to ensure deadlines, goals, and objectives are met.

17.) Attends and participates in required staff meetings.

18.) Contributes to the comfort and dignity of a patient and provide care that is consistent with patient and family needs and goals.

19.) Organized and works efficiently with minimal supervision.

20.) Is a self-starter who demonstrates flexibility, motivation, initiative, and commitment.

21.) Identifies and reports areas of risk and safety concerns to supervisor.

22.) Exemplifies Hospice of Southern Illinois core values in daily practice.

23.) Timely and accurate timesheet documentation according to policy.

24.) Appropriate management of paid time off.

25.) Other duties as assigned.
