POSITION OVERVIEW

Position title: Junior Specialist
Salary range: The posted UC system-wide salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See Table 24B for the salary range at UCSB. A reasonable estimated full-time rate for this position at 100% time is $50,300-$60,000. “Off-scale salaries”, i.e. a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Institute for Collaborative Biotechnologies (ICB) is an Army-sponsored University Affiliated Research Center (UARC). The ICB is a uniquely interdisciplinary research alliance led by the University of California, Santa Barbara, in collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the California Institute of Technology and partners from the Army and industry.

ICB research is driven by more than 50 premier faculty working together with graduate students project scientists, specialists, and professional researchers as interdisciplinary teams of biologists, chemists, physicists, psychologists, physicians, social scientists, and engineers. These teams develop biologically inspired, revolutionary technological innovations in systems and synthetic biology, materials science and engineering, biotechnology tools and cognitive neuroscience.

The ICB is actively seeking Junior Specialists to commit effort on ICB projects. This is a large, pooled recruitment covering many disciplines and research foci. Screening of applicants is ongoing and will continue as needed through October 31, 2023. The number of positions varies depending on the needs of the department. The use of a pooled recruitment does not guarantee that an open position exists at the time you are applying. Positions may range from part-time to full-time.

Junior Specialists enable research as part of a team. They must possess a baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree) or have equivalent research experience.

Appointees to the Specialist series engage in specialized research, professional activity, and University and/or public service. Specialists use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions to the research enterprise of the University and to achieve recognition in the professional and scientific community. Specialists may participate in University and/or public service depending upon funding source and duties of the position.

Candidates for appointment, and subsequent personnel cases, will be reviewed on the following criteria (which are provided as guidelines and may be used flexibly where deemed necessary):

1) Performance in research in the defined area of expertise and specialization,
2) Professional competence and activity, and
3) University and/or public service

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Appointees must possess a baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree) or have 2 or more years of equivalent research/educational experience, at time of application.

  • Previous research experience in applicable or relevant field/specialization.
