Job Description

Mountain Gateway Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education and one of 23 community colleges in Virginia. The college is supported by the Commonwealth of Virginia; the counties of Alleghany, Bath, Botetourt (northern portion) and Rockbridge; the cities of Buena Vista, Covington, and Lexington; and the town of Clifton Forge. MGCC provides opportunities for the extension of knowledge, skills and personal enrichment in an environment that maintains high academic standards and respect for each individual. Mountain Gateway Community College Library is looking for highly organized candidate with excellent interpersonal skills for the part time position of Library Assistant. This person will work directly with students, faculty, and staff to provide information services, assist with student library orientation and library promotional activities. This position is responsible for sorting and shelving books according to their categorization, assisting customers with internet access and ensuring their technical needs are met. Managing inquiries over the counter, via email or telephone, chat reference services. Provide online and on campus library research workshops to faculty and students.

Essential duties and responsibilities
  • Perform circulation desk procedures such as checking materials in and out, placing holds etc.
  • Provide student and public service by answering directional and informational questions in person and by telephone, email, and live chat.
  • Provide basic reference and technical assistance and, when necessary, refer visitors to appropriate personnel for additional service.
  • Assist with computer, copier, and printer instruction and issues.
  • Provide back-up assistance for inter-library loan requests.
  • Assists individual and groups of students with online research and library databases.
  • Shelve books and maintain stacks in good order.
  • Perform data entry.
  • Create library signage and flyers as assigned.
  • Create student IDs.
  • Provide test proctoring services in the library’s Testing Center.
  • Complete all mandatory training and participate in professional development activities each year.
  • Other duties as assigned

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.



KSA's/Required Qualifications
  • Strong knowledge of office technologies such as computers, performing Internet searches, Microsoft Office
  • Excellent customer service skills and strong organizational skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and sensitivity to a multicultural environment
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all students, faculty, staff, and community patrons
  • Accurate typing/data entry skills and demonstrated ability to work with attention to detail
  • Demonstrates ethical and professional behavior

Associate Degree or Equivalent education and experience
