A medical writer works alongside doctors and other medical practitioners. They write and edit a vast range of resources such as health advice leaflets and website contents, educational materials including slides, posters, speaker briefs, presentations for conferences, newsletters, medical reports, journal manuscripts for peer review and other materials for the public relations teams such as press releases.
Medical writers use scientific knowledge and writing skills to effectively and clearly communicate technical medical science information in writing. Medical Writers generally focus on either scientific medical writing, which includes medical studies, drug trials and regulatory documents, or marketing medical writing, which includes news releases and advertising copy for a wider audience.
Responsibilities
- Ensures that the content, format and structure of every content comply with the regulatory, journal or other guidelines;
- Reviews and proofreading of materials to check the quality and scientific accuracy;
- Ensures that projects are delivered on time;
- Liaising and/or collaborating with doctors and medical practitioners on various project details;
- Do the research and other requirements to be able to assess and understand data/information that they will be used in writing;
- Write, review and edit marketing medical writing;
- Aware of the current medical practices and regulatory requirements that affect medical writing.
Skills and Qualifications
- Extensive knowledge of English grammar with a familiarity with a standard style guide;
- Ability to communicate scientific or medical information in a clear and concise manner;
- Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, email, and the Internet;
- Familiarity with the principles of clinical research;
- Ability to interpret and present clinical data and other complex information;
