Join us at innovationOchsner (iO) and become part of the team that is reimagining healthcare for the future. As medical writer, you will be at the forefront of healthcare transformation, developing content for use in interactive mobile apps; EHR-embedded care plans; web-or SMS-based patient education; print collateral; video and audio scripts; and other media we haven't thought of yet. You will work with a multidisciplinary team of renowned clinicians, behavioral and data scientists, and software engineers to build out our solution portfolio. Your job will be to make complex medical and scientific concepts accessible to a variety of audiences, all while remaining on-brand and faithful to the evidence. Your content will be meticulously researched, carefully vetted, persuasive, and engaging.

Education

Required - Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences, health sciences, public health, or related field; or a degree in journalism or communications, but with a proven track record of science and medical communications.

Science or medical writing degree or certificate desired but not required.

Work Experience

Required - 2 years of experience in editorial/writing with a variety of consumer-facing content.

Preferred – 2 years of experience with health or wellness content.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Adept at using PubMed, Google Scholar, and other databases that catalog the primary literature to research the underlying basis for content.
  • Basic knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, familiarity with medical terms, and a general understanding of chronic disease management.
  • Skilled at producing clinical content that is palatable, comprehensible, and of the appropriate reading level for audiences of various educational backgrounds.
  • Comfortable following a codified editorial process with formalized clinical review, fact-checking, and content maintenance requirements.
  • Comfortable working with UX designers, behavior change specialists, and other stakeholders to shape messaging; modify word count, flow, and tone; and collaborate on visual and multimedia complements to content.
  • Knowledge of health literacy theory and experience using readability statistics preferred but not required.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to communicate complex topics clearly and simply.
  • Passion for empowering people to adopt healthy changes for health and wellness.
  • Time management/project management skills and ability to work on and manage multiple, concurrent projects and meet deadlines.

Job Duties

  • Creates a wide variety of evidence-based print and digital content for use by patients, caregivers, health coaches, clinicians, and consumers.
  • Collaborates with UX designers, behavior change specialists, clinicians, and others to optimize the end-to-end experience of the content-consumer.
  • Edits, proofreads, and performs fresh eyes review of content produced by other writers.
  • Strictly adheres to deadlines and requirements regarding literacy level, word count, and style.
  • Writes, edits, and updates employee-facing content, such as educational articles, training guides, or phone scripts for patient-facing team members.
  • Ensures all content is on-brand and consistent in terms of style, quality, health literacy level, and tone.
