About the Role: We are looking for an experienced Metallurgical Engineer to join our Metals Platform team in Flagstaff, Arizona. In this role, you will provide new product and technology development teams with metallurgical expertise in materials and process selection with the goal of accelerating the development time required to bring a design from concept to product feasibility.
Responsibilities:
  • Provide metallurgical engineering support for development of complex implantable medical devices and technology
  • Provide expertise in the processing and evaluation of medical device materials such as nitinol, stainless steel, and cobalt-chrome alloys
  • Drive technology development projects to enable next generation medical devices
  • Build and maintain strong interpersonal and cross-functional relationships
  • Solve technical challenges and perform research to understand interactions between materials and medical device performance
  • Work closely with the design teams, prototyping and new product development teams, other multi-disciplined engineers, product specialists, intellectual property champions, supply chain, manufacturing associates, and regulatory agencies in the development of new products for medical applications
  • Engage actively with external partners (suppliers, test facilities, standards committees, technical conferences, academia)

Required Qualifications:
  • Advanced degree in Metallurgical/Materials Engineering OR a Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgical/Materials Engineering or related discipline plus a minimum of 3 years post graduate experience in a related field
  • Hands on experience with tensile and fatigue testing
  • Understanding of physical and mechanical metallurgical principals and ability to apply these principles
  • Demonstrated knowledge of nitinol properties, processing and microstructure relationships
  • Demonstrated creative problem-solving capability
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively in team situations, as well as independently
  • Ability to travel up to 10%
Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience with stainless steel, cobalt chrome alloys, electropolishing, surface science, and corrosion testing
  • Knowledge of statistical data analysis techniques and the design of experiments
  • Familiarity with medical device prototyping and manufacturing, quality control systems, design control, validations, and regulatory requirements
