By joining the Division of Mine Safety, Harlan Branch as a Mine Safety Specialist I in Harlan County, you will help to ensure all coal miners in the Commonwealth are provided with a safe working environment; provide effective education and training to coal miners to foster safe work practices; and ensure that statutes and regulations regarding coal mining are enforced fairly and consistently throughout the Commonwealth.

Holders of the Mine Safety Specialist I position will complete tasks such as:
  • Inspects coal mines and makes safety recommendations
  • Trains and serves as a member of the Division's Mine Rescue Team
  • Assists with mine rescue and recovery work
  • Assists in accident investigations and investigates complaints
  • Attends safety seminars

Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: See Special Requirements.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Must have five (5) years experience in coal mines in Kentucky.

Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in mining engineering will substitute for two (2) years of the required experience in coal mines in Kentucky OR graduate of a college or university with an associate's degree in mining technology will substitute for one (1) year of the required experience in coal mines in Kentucky.

Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: NONE

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must be a Kentucky Certified Mine Foreman by the Kentucky Department for Natural Resources. Must possess a valid driver's license. Must obtain a Kentucky Mine Inspector Certification, Kentucky Mine Rescue Certification and Kentucky Mine Instructor Certification within six (6) months of employment in this job. Must become a working member of Division of Mine Safety's Mine Rescue Team within six (6) months of employment in this job. Must maintain compliance with 30 CFR Part 49.17 for Mine Rescue Team participation. Must pass random drug screening tests for length of employment in this job. Employees in this job title are subject to the physical requirements outlined on MSHA Form 5000-3 in compliance with 30 CFT Part 49.17 prior to employment in this job classification and must submit to an annual physical exam documented on MSHA Form 5000-3. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s0, certification(s) or other credentials. Must maintain all required certifications as identified in Special Requirements above for length of employment in this job. Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
