Duties: The State University of New York at New Paltz is currently seeking a talented safety professional to join our team as an Occupational Health and Safety Specialist. The successful candidate should have the skills necessary to help provide safety and health leadership to the campus, the ability to help ensure that systems effectively address H&S risks, help develop and/or align the H&S strategy and assist with facilitating H&S ownership within the organization.

Duties:

Investigate and respond to health and safety concerns and coordinate corrective actions

Perform routine safety inspection to ensure regulatory compliance and assess for hazardous conditions and recommend remedial action as necessary

Coordinate, develop and present campus safety-training programs

Prepare required regulatory and compliance reports related to the internal and external audits

Coordinate the campus hazardous waste disposal program including inspections and pick up of hazardous waste, keeping inventory of hazardous waste and coordinate for disposal

Provide training on the proper selection, use and care of PPE

Conduct respirator training and fit testing

Conduct, evaluate, and report periodic asbestos condition surveys across campus

Manage campus safety programs, such as the Confined Space Program, Hearing Conservation Program, etc. according to OSHA/PESH requirements

Respond to Environmental Health and Safety work order requests

Provide OSHA, PESH, and general safety training both during and outside of campus core hours

Administer campus lighting surveys as it relates to requirements in NFPA 101 and current NYS Building Codes

Qualifications: Required:

At least an Associate degree from college or University accredited by the US Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization plus a minimum 2 years of professional experience in Environmental Health and Safety, hazardous waste, and/or industrial hygiene

Excellent written and oral communication skills

Proficient in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Adobe as well as the ability to utilize mobile applications for inspection recording

Knowledge and experience in interpreting EPA/OSHA/DOL regulations

Experience in developing and facilitating training

Valid Driver's License

Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds

Ability to work independently, prioritizing work and balancing multiple projects concurrently

Preferred:

Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Environmental Health and Safety or related degree and a minimum 4 years of professional experience in Environmental Health and Safety, hazardous waste, and/or industrial hygiene

Valid NYS Asbestos Project Monitor, Contractor/ Supervisor or Inspector Certification

Confined Space Program management experience

Knowledge of NYS Building Codes

CSP, CIH or CHMM Certification

Hazmat Training or 40 Hr HAZWOPER Certification
