JOB SUMMARY:

To assist in providing appropriate health care services within each of the school district’s educational facilities, under the direction of the School Nurse.

ASSIGNMENT:

6.5 hours per student school day.

MAJOR AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:

85%

Health Care Services.

  • Assist in providing episodic and first aid care to students and staff.
  • Care for students coming to the nurses office
  • Determine action to be taken if ill or injured
  • Provide appropriate first aid as necessary.
  • Dispense medications to students as directed by school policy and School Nurse
  • Document steps taken.
  • Assist in Kindergarten Round-up screening process.

Communications

  • Assist in communications with staff, parents and students on important health issues.
  • Assist in providing health care procedures specific to students needs.

10%

Recordkeeping

  • Assist in updating health records.
  • Assist in tracking inventories.

CRITICAL SKILLS/EXPERTISE

Physical Involvement:

  • Able to travel between buildings.
  • Able to respond quickly to emergency situations.
  • Be accessible.
  • Possible lifting or re-positioning of students.

Mental Involvement:

  • Make decisions related to medical attention potentially affecting the health and welfare of either staff or students.
  • Identify critical health issues and prioritize service to those most in need.
  • Be able to respond in crisis situations and take immediate action when needed in potential life and death circumstances.

Working Conditions:

  • Exposure to blood and body fluids and infectious diseases.
  • Travel between buildings.

Supervision of Other Employees:

  • This position does not include supervision or work direction of other employees.

MIMUMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.

Experience:

  • Experience in the medical field is preferred.

Special Knowledge or Skills:

  • CPR preferred or acquired within 6 months of hire.
  • First Aid preferred or acquired within 6 months of hire.
  • Knowledge of health/wellness, nursing functions, body systems, communicable diseases preferred.

Equipment, Machines, Tools, Electronic Devices, Software:

  • Computer, audiometer, tympanometer, blood glucose monitor, copies, telephone, catherization equipment, nursing equipment for health care procedures.

JOB OUTCOMES:

  • Projects a positive, cooperative and respectful attitude with community members, parents, students and other employees.
  • Promotes optimal levels of well being in students and oversee health-related services.
  • Maintains accurate and up to date records for student health offices.
  • Assists in providing appropriate equipment, leadership and direction for the health and well being of students within the school facility.
  • Documents health related concerns.
  • Assists in both prevention and intervention related to student health services.
