Duties

Increase visitor enjoyment and understanding of park resources, the National Park Service Mission, and park's enabling legislation. Conducts basic research of topics for the purpose of developing and presenting guided bus and house tours, education programs, briefings, lectures, multi-media shows, structured and impromptu talks, living history demonstrations, on- and off-site programs to schools, community groups, subject matter specialists, and special interest groups, about park resources and the rules for park usage, employing appropriate interpretive techniques and devices geared to the characteristics and interests of particular audiences. Uses audience-centered interpretive techniques as appropriate. Attends visitor center desk and performs tasks associated with the operations of front-line information center to guide visitors to resources and answer visitor questions. Other duties may include insuring that supplies, materials and other support items are available on a day-to-day basis. The Ranger's responsibilities include the maintenance of inventories, stocking, management of accountable property, management of information flow into and out of the facility, update of exhibits, and maintenance of bulletin boards and audio-visual equipment (projectors, Travelers Information Service, DVD programs).Uses social media and web to provide orientation, information, and interpretation to the public. Attend and participate in community outreach events. Work cooperatively with park partners and community-based organizations. Tracks and reports statistics including visitor use, volunteer, and interpretive programs. Researches park's natural and cultural resources, management, and administrative history. Educates staff, volunteers, and visitors regarding management, rules, and regulations of the park.

Physical Demands: The work of the Ranger is indoor and outdoor work. Interpretive work is usually not strenuous, but that Ranger is required to stand and walk extensively in some cases over rough surfaces or inclines, carrying backpacks, tools, rescue equipment, or other loads. Rangers engaged in firefighting, search and rescue, and similar activities engage in strenuous activities, often lifting or carrying equipment weighing more than 50 pounds.

Working Conditions: The Ranger's interpretive presentations are given sometimes indoors in visitor's centers or outside the park in school classrooms or community centers, and often. outdoors at campgrounds or on trails, some of which are level and some of which are steep and slippery. The Ranger is subjected to bad weather, insects, and other discomforts and, in some cases, hazards of rough terrain. During emergency and all risk operations, the work is performed at various hours of the day and night and for prolonged periods of time without rest.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-02/06/2023-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.

FOR THE GS-05, you must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 grade level of difficulty and responsibility.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: I possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 level. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position. Examples of specialized experience could include Park Guide or tour leader; environmental educator; teacher; naturalist; law enforcement or investigative work; archeological or historical preservation research work; forestry and/or fire management work in a park, recreation, or conservation area; management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations; or other similar work. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in level of difficulty and responsibility to that of at least the GS-04 grade level in the federal service.

Education: Four years of education above high school (120 semester hour or 180 quarter hours) leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or 24 semester hours of course work in a related field, and I do not have the experience described in A above. (Related fields of study include natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, education, environmental education, interpretation, history, archaeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources.)

Combination Education and Specialized Experience: NOTE: Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. Two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent to l year of specialized experience. For example, I have 6 months of the specialized experience described above(50% of the experience requirement), and 3 years of college study from an accredited institution (50% of the qualifying education) which included at least 12 semester hours of related coursework as specified above (50% of the related coursework required).

Current surplus and current or former displaced Federal individuals who have special priority selection rights under the Agency Career Transition Assistance Program (CTAP) or the Interagency Career Transition Assistance Program (ICTAP) must be well qualified for the position to receive consideration for special priority selection. Well qualified means that the applicant meets the following: OPM qualification standards for the position; all selective placement factors, where applicable; special qualifying conditions that OPM has approved for the position, where applicable; is physically qualified with reasonable accommodation, where appropriate to satisfactorily perform the duties of the position upon entry; and is rated by the organization at least at the well qualified level on all competencies. Additional information
