Job Details

The Patrol Deputy is responsible for patrolling County roads, city roads, State Highways, Interstates,
conducting snowmobile and boat patrol, enforcing state and local laws. This position responds to citizen
complaints and emergencies and investigation of illegal activity. Under direction of the Sheriff and
supervisors, this position performs general law enforcement work to protect life and property and enforce local
laws and ordinances throughout Freeborn County. Duties include: protecting and assisting the public by
responding to a variety of calls or citizen complaints; responding to emergencies such as crashes, fires,
domestic assaults, fights, burglaries, and alarms; assisting detectives by investigative groundwork for illegal
activity; performing a variety of court duties, and paperwork; resolving conflict and mitigating civil
disagreement. This position must maintain good relationships and assist other departments and other law
enforcement agencies, emergency services and social services.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Patrol Freeborn County to protect and respond to the public while preserving law and order
and prevent or discover crimes. Patrol all areas within Freeborn County, including U.S.
Highways, State Highways, County Roads and Township Roads. Patrol areas may also
include cities within the County that are with or without their own police department.
  • Assist local police departments within Freeborn County, other state and local agencies,
whenever possible and practical, with situations including but not limited to crashes, domestic
assaults, fights, burglaries, thefts, special events or other instances that require assistance.
  • Performs routine patrol that includes traffic enforcement in cities and county parks.
  • Investigation of vehicle crashes, various crimes, and deaths including collection and
preservation of evidence and statements. Makes arrests as needed.
  • Prepare reports documenting actions/incidents during the call for service in a timely manner
and serve civil and legal paperwork, including but not limited to Summons and Complaints,
Court Orders, Foreclosure Notices, Orders for Protection, Harassment Orders and
Subpoenas.
  • Testifies in court and participates in preparation of court cases.
  • Drafts and execute search documents, property, and evidence pertaining to a crime.
  • Prioritizes calls for service on severity basis and responds to most severe first.
  • Responds to critical incidents that require the SWAT Team.
  • Investigate missing persons cases, including but not limited to children and vulnerable adults
as necessary and required by law.
  • Conduct search and rescue in instances of lost persons, such as hunters, bikers, hikers,
cavers, swimmers, boaters and tubers. This may also include downed aircraft and stranded
snowmobilers.
  • Provide security/transports of prisoners.
  • Respond and assists in medical emergencies, fires, and natural disaster situations.
  • Works with other departments/ agencies (Fire, other law enforcement agencies, social
services and court services).
  • Trains, maintains, and recertifies in accordance with FAA regulations to operate a drone.
  • Prepares and instructs course work, files, and maintains paperwork associated with Field
Training/Firearms/Use of Force/Taser trainings.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities
  • Acquire and maintain current knowledge of federal, state, county, and local laws and
ordinances.
  • Keep up to date with legislative updates, law changes and court decisions relevant to the
performance of duties.
  • Attend training as required by the Sheriff and/or POST Board.
  • Maintain proficiency in use and maintenance of all office owned and issued equipment.
  • Acquire and maintain current knowledge of streets, highways, and geography of Freeborn
County.
  • Maintain tactical and technical proficiency with job responsibilities.

called upon to perform a variety of duties as part of their role with the County.

Position Requirements

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Working knowledge of laws, ordinances, rules and policies effective in Freeborn County.
  • Knowledge of modern police practices and methods.
  • Knowledge of First Aid methods and techniques.
  • Skill in operation and maintenance of equipment and weapons used in activities.
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to effectively use a computer and various software programs.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule
form.
  • Work complexity includes complex and significant variables, which requires analytical ability
and inductive thinking in adapting policies, procedures, and methods to fit unusual or
complex situations.
  • Ability to handle a variety of typical assignments and problems under moderate supervision
within standard operating procedures.
  • Ability to apply considerable analytical skills to select, evaluate, and interpret data from
several sources.
  • Effective communication skills to provide regular contact with office, outside agencies and the
public.
Education and Experience
  • Two-year Associates degree in Law Enforcement or equivalent as approved by the
Minnesota POST Board.
Licenses/Certifications
This position will require the acquisition and maintenance of the following additional certificates/licenses:
  • MN Peace Officer License
- Emergency Vehicle Operation Course - - Firearms/Use of Force/Taser
  • Class D Driver’s License or equivalent
  • AED/First Aid and CPR

Equipment and Tools Responsibilities
  • Frequently operates squad car, radar, recording equipment, computer, cameras, PBT, and
office equipment. Intermittently must operate drone, boat, snowmobile, ATV, hand held Lidar,
night vision, medical supplies and other County vehicles.
  • Intermittently use fire extinguisher and AED.
  • Continuously carries firearm, taser, baton and less lethal equipment.


Physical and Mental Requirements
Positions in this job typically require: sitting, walking, running, stooping, bending, feeling, manual
dexterity, grasping, talking, hearing, typing, and seeing. This position encounters unexpected and
prolonged workdays and stress and pressure from dealing with emotional issues, conflicts and physical
altercations. This position is generally light-duty and may require the exertion up to 60 pounds of force on
occasion and the ability to lift, carry, push, pull and move objects, including persons.
This position is exposed to threats, trauma, offensive language, and deadly assault. This position
occasionally performs under tight deadlines and attention to detail.
