POSITION SUMMARY:

Responsible for orienting, instructing, assisting and evaluating members in the use of strength training and cardiovascular equipment. Instructs classes/programs in a specialized program area. Acts as a liaison and an advocate for YMCA Health & Wellness programs in the Personal Fitness department.

PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES:

  • Plans and instructs classes in a specialty area. Observes and discusses individual progress
  • with participants
  • Develops positive relationships with participants and provides motivational support and guidance.
  • Increases participant awareness of all healthy lifestyle factors.
  • Encourages member and parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers.
  • Attends staff meetings and approved trainings as required.
  • Sets up and takes down class equipment. Reports equipment problems.
  • Ensures safe and effective classes. Responds to, and reports, accidents and incidents.
  • Conveys basic knowledge of all YMCA Health & Wellness program areas to participants and refers members to the appropriate program director or staff.
  • Tracks, monitors, evaluates and transitions program participants when needed.
  • May assist or lead Total Health Orientation, Get Real Weight Management, Eight Weeks to Wellness and other motivational group classes.

QUALIFICATIONS:

High school education or equivalent preferred. Ability to set up, move and store class equipment and lift up to 45 lbs. Ability to respond to safety and emergency situations Personal Trainers are required to hold YMCA Personal Training certification or a nationally recognized personal training certification (i.e. ACE, NASM, ACSM, AFAA). It is the responsibility of the instructor to maintain certifications. Additionally, it is the instructors’ monetary responsibility to maintain those certifications. Instructor should demonstrate the people skills to be able to work well with members, coworkers and supervisors.

Upon hire:

  • Current Child & Infant and Adult CPR, AED and First Aid must be obtained within 30-days of hire and be current throughout length of employment.
  • South Sound YMCA’s - New Employee Orientation must be obtained within 45-days of hire.
