Description for Police Mental Health Clinician: A full time position with excellent benefits providing outreach clinical interventions with police. This position will go into the field with law enforcement on police calls to provide crisis intervention, de-escalation, mental health assessment, and help provide safe disposition and referrals for ongoing support. Services are primarily field based. The position will be equally shared between Montpelier and Barre City Police Departments and the clinician will be based in both police departments. The clinician will collaborate closely with the Emergency Screening Team and Access clinicians as well as other human service partners.

Police Mental Health Clinician Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Provide outreach support to community members in crisis during police calls with law enforcement.
• Provide clinical assessment of mental health needs for people interacting with law enforcement and facilitate referrals to appropriate providers.
• Provide de-escalation techniques and interventions for people in crisis and distress.
• Provide outreach in the community to offer mental health and other social supports as appropriate.
• Coordinate referrals to longer term service providers and provide social support resource information to community members in crisis. Coordinate with other social service providers.

The successful Police Mental Health Clinician will have the following skills:

• Have experience working in crisis intervention.
• Have experience in home/field-based services with a considerable emphasis on mobile outreach.
• Possess excellent case management skills to collaborate effectively with other social service providers and facilitate referrals efficiently.
• Possess strong communication and collaboration skills as position will be interacting with numerous other providers both internal and external to WCMHS.
• Demonstrate clinical interviewing and assessment skills, both oral and written.
• Have an understanding of substance use issues and intervention needs.
• Be reliable, on time, flexible and able to work both as a team member and independently.
• Possess excellent organizational and follow-up skills. Electronic health record-keeping on time a must.

Qualifications for Police Mental Health Clinician: Master’s Degree preferred with relevant experience. Must have safe vehicle and clean driving record. This is a regular full-time position with benefits. Schedule will be flexible with evening hours required.
