Environmental Health Specialist

Do you have a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health, Biology, Environmental Science or related field?
Through inspecting, providing education and outreach, the Environmental Health Specialist protects community members from harm of mishandled food, environmental hazards and more.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Food Establishment Inspections: enforcement of laws, rules, regulations governing the production processing, packaging, distribution of foods. Educate food establishments on proper food sanitation.
  • Investigating public health complaints: Investigates complaints about rodents, trash and debris, bed bugs, cockroaches, unfit living conditions, un-maintained swimming pools
  • Environmental Public Records Requests: Conducting assessments and searching records
  • Animal bites investigations: Receive and investigate animal bite reports to prevent rabies infection.
  • Tattoo facility inspections: Inspects and educates tattoo/body piercing personnel on infectious waste and universal precautions to prevent transmission of Bloodborne Pathogens and infectious diseases.
  • Septic Systems: Assist Senior Environmental Health Specialist with permits and public record requests.
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements:

  • Qualified candidate must have a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health, Biology, Environmental Science or related field.
  • Ability to read, research and interpret various technical documents (ie blueprints, project plans and topographic maps) and Legal codes (IAC, IC, CFR, local ordinance) is necessary.
  • Successful candidates must have excellent communication, organization and computer skills. Must be able to work on a variety of tasks and understand rules of confidentiality.
  • Must be organized, self-motivated with ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to be on-call and to respond to public health emergencies after business hours.
  • New hire must agree to adhere to all policies and procedures of DeKalb County Government and State

Board of Accounts.

  • Valid driver’s license required. Must be willing to subject to background check/motor vehicle report.
