Since the 1980s, the number of women in prison has increased by more than 700%. In 2019, more than 218,000 women – approximately 75% of whom were of reproductive age – were behind bars in the U.S. With this rise, addressing women’s healthcare needs inside correctional settings – including pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care – has become increasingly necessary.

The Qualitative Analysis Assistant will support qualitative analyses on two interconnected projects, both focused on supporting the health and wellbeing of pregnant and postpartum people in prison:

Project #1
Enhanced Perinatal Programs for People in Prison (E4P) is analyzing pregnancy and postpartum support programs being offered to incarcerated individuals in six states. The goal of the project is to share valuable, practical, and applicable information to community-based programs, prison administrators, and correctional healthcare providers about how to implement and sustain perinatal support programs to promote maternal and neonatal health.

There are three specific aims to this project: 1) Identify facilitators and barriers to implementation of pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum support programs for pregnant people who are in prison, 2) Evaluate the pregnancy and birth outcomes of program participants, and 3) Evaluate the postpartum outcomes of program participants.

This position will support qualitative analyses of semi-structured interviews with 30 key stakeholders implementing pregnancy and postpartum support programs in six geographically-diverse state prisons (AL, AR, GA, MI, MN, VA).

Project #2

This position will support qualitative analyses of three different project components: 1) semi-structured interviews with 60 people who were pregnant or postpartum and incarcerated about their experiences with prison health services and social support during the pandemic; 2) secondary analysis of the E4P Project’s semi-structured interviews with 30 key stakeholders to assess the impact of COVID-19 on health care services and social support over time; and 3) analyzing and coding six states’ Department of Corrections’ (DOC) communications related to the provision of health care services impacting pregnant and postpartum people, as well as impacts on social support throughout the course of COVID-19 pandemic.
