ABOUT THE SCHOOL/DEPARTMENT


Adult ESL & Literacy Program

The mission of the Jeffco Adult ESL and Literacy program is to provide quality English language and literacy instruction that prepares adult multilingual and refugee learners for a successful future.

Classes are offered for multilingual and refugee learners with limited literacy skills to the Beginning, Intermediate and/or Advanced levels of English. All classes are designed to challenge multilingual and refugee learners to improve listening, speaking, reading, writing, and grammar skills. Pre and post-test assessments are used to measure progress and guide instruction.

ABOUT THE JOB


Lead the implementation of the grant which includes coordinating the pre-literacy and language classes and integration/assimilation activities for multilingual/refugee students and instructors. Effectively communicate with key stakeholders (multilingual/refugee students, instructors, community agencies, resettlement agencies, Adult ESL & Literacy Coordinator. K-12 colleagues, etc.).

Hourly Rate: $28.24, Annual Rate: $58,736.98 Effective as of: 08-16-2022


**Annual salary noted above is based on an 8 hour day and full days worked calendar. Any position that is less than a full FTE/8 hours per day or late start will be prorated accordingly.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENT


The successful new hire or rehired candidate will be responsible to complete and incur the fingerprinting and processing fee of $54.50 through an appropriate fingerprinting vendor and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, within 48 hours of offer acceptance.

RESPONSIBILITIES


SUMMARY: Lead the implementation of the grant which includes coordinating the pre-literacy and language classes and integration/assimilation activities for multilingual/refugee students and instructors. Effectively communicate with key stakeholders (multilingual/refugee students, instructors, community agencies, resettlement agencies, Adult ESL & Literacy Coordinator. K-12 colleagues, etc.).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Refugee Liaison/Instructional Lead

In collaboration with the Adult ESL Coordinator and the grant funders, implement the pre-literacy and language classes and integration/assimilation activities set by the grant.

Take the lead in regular reporting requirements to the grant funders including attendance.

Accurately maintain all required data within the grant database.

Co-represent the program at regular meetings initiated by the grant funder.

Collaborate with community agencies for educational and life resources.

Design instructional schedules for multilingual learners (specifically refugees) according to student needs, availability of resources (personnel and space), and ongoing pre-literacy and language class schedules.

Conduct English proficiency testing, administer pre and post assessments, and maintain open enrollment structures for incoming multilingual/refugee students.

Provide curriculum support to instructors and/or tutors teaching multilingual/refugee students.

Provide required grant training to all staff annually.

Act as substitute teacher for pre-literacy and language classes when needed.

Accurately maintain all required data within the grant database.

Collaborate with the Adult ESL Coordinator, other instructional staff, refugee resettlement agencies, K-12 Jeffco Schools personnel working with refugee children, and volunteers.

Coordination of Assessments

Coordinate with Program Coordinator to maintain grant assessment compliance.

Ensure all staff are properly trained to administer assessments.

Review and monitor inventory of assessment materials as needed.

Create assessment schedules for students and staff/monitor hours between pre & post-testing to assure compliance.

Prepare assessment data to share with Program Coordinator to be used for PD, notice trends

EDUCATION AND TRAINING: BA or BS postsecondary degree required.

EXPERIENCE: Five years’ documented classroom experience with adult learners from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Experience teaching students new to the United States with limited to no formal education who are at the pre-literacy and language level. Experience administering standardized assessments. Experience working with multilingual/refugee populations. Experience working with databases, entering data, and running reports.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & EQUIPMENT: Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Must be flexible and have capacity for dealing with ambiguity. Ability to effectively negotiate cultural differences and maintain a safe and equitable learning environment. Knowledge of reading/writing process for second language learners. Knowledge of sheltered instruction techniques. Understanding of the unique needs of refugee and immigrant adult learners. Ability to use Microsoft Windows applications and learn to use the Geneva database set up for recording refugee data. Well developed technology skills are needed.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS: CLDE endorsement or TESOL certification.

SUPERVISION/TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITY: Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; addressing complaints and resolving problems; and assisting with interviewing, hiring, provides training and updated information regarding policies and procedures, contract interpretation.

CONTACTS: Position requires daily contact with persons within/outside department/building; vendors/suppliers; applicants; and citizen, public, and governmental organizations to apply established HR business practices to controversial or confidential matters.
