Sailing Crew/Guide Job at Sightsailing

Sightsailing Newport, RI 02840

$225 - $350 a day

Sightsailing has been taking guests on public sailing cruises and private charters since 1990. Check us out at www.sightsailing.com. We love to sail and show guests a good time and it shows!

We are hiring crew for both our 80' schooner Aquidneck and 46' sloop Sightsailer.

Picture your workplace: You’re outside, on Narragansett Bay, in Newport, RI, on the deck of a sailboat. You’re breathing in the invigorating, fresh sea air while sailing in the sailing capital of the world.

At the beginning and end of the day, you’ll be getting the boat ready to sail: You'll be cleaning the deck, loading drinks onboard or getting food and drink on.

Then you’re helping sail the boat: You’re casting off lines, pulling up sails, pulling on lines, turning winches, etc. (Watch the Crew Overview Video in the Employment section of our website).

You’re busy talking guests and pointing out sights to guests. You will be pouring a mimosa, glass of champagne, or serving a beer.

For those who enjoy meeting and talking with people, history, physical outdoor work on the water, this is the job for you.

Availability: For Sightsailer: You need to be available from the end of May or early June through Labor Day, and then weekends until late September).

For Aquidneck: It’s ideal if you can commit to work our entire sailing season from May through the end of October.

Sailing Experience: You don’t have to be Joe-Pro Racer but understanding the basics of sailing and having some sailing experience is really helpful and more likely to get you an interview. If you are weak on sailing experience but still like the idea of working outside near the water, consider applying for a Sailing Dock Office Staff position.

Public Speaking: Sightsailing combines sailing with leisurely sightseeing. We don’t offer a fully narrated sail but we do describe the major points of interest we sail past. Having a good "stage presence" and public speaking skills is important. You need to be comfortable "reading the room" and be natural engaging with guests and pointing out some sights. Being able to project your voice on the windy deck of a boat and address small groups is important. You need to be a people person. Shrinking Violets and Silent Sams need not apply.
