JOB SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Assistant Controller, the Sr. Accountant will be responsible for a variety of accounting transactions in support of the Controller and Finance Office. This position requires a strong working knowledge of general accepted accounting principles, treasury and gift functions, financial systems and internal controls, and the ability to prepare financial reconciliations, analysis, and journal entries. The position also requires close attention to detail and the ability to work well independently as well as with other Financial Staff and departments on campus.

JOB SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Assistant Controller, the Sr. Accountant will be responsible for a variety of accounting transactions in support of the Controller and Finance Office. This position requires a strong working knowledge of general accepted accounting principles, treasury and gift functions, financial systems and internal controls, and the ability to prepare financial reconciliations, analysis, and journal entries. The position also requires close attention to detail and the ability to work well independently as well as with other Financial Staff and departments on campus.
REPORTS TO: Assistant Controller
RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
- Monitor and ensure adherence to the internal control policies, procedures, compliance with financial, and reporting requirements.
- Manage all aspects of the general ledger.
- Prepare monthly reconciliation of all bank accounts.
- Review and monitor balance sheet accounts, including analysis of Trial Balance/General Ledger, and perform adjustments on a monthly basis.
- Prepare required monthly and ad hoc analyses and schedules.
- Maintain Fixed Assets module and related schedules.
- Prepare and record monthly closing entries.
- Prepare other monthly reconciliations as needed.
- Assist with budgets and forecasting expenses for assigned programs.
- Help prepare tax returns - Forms 990, 990-T, 1099's, etc.
- Ensure that the Accounting and Financial policies & procedures are being followed.
- Reconcile investment accounts and make appropriate entries as needed.
- Work with senior finance staff to assist in preparing requested financial reports.
- Assist Controller in annual audit with the external auditors.
- Ensure compliance with long-term debt agreements, including debt service payments, annual reporting requirements, monthly billings, and debt covenants.
- Manage Endowment funds for compliance with donor stipulated endowment and restricted fund agreements.
- Assist with the implementation of new accounting standards for financial statements, revenue recognition, and lease accounting.
- Assist the general accounting, accounts payable, and grants accounting functions.
- Perform other job related duties and projects as assigned by the Finance Office.
REQUIREMENTS: (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Strong understanding of and the ability to adhere to generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
- Proficient with Accounting General Ledger software, Microsoft Office Suite or similar software. Including strong Excel and Word skills.
- Ability to research problems and develop solutions with minimal guidance.
- Good organizational skills.
- Ability to work as part of a team with a flexible attitude.
- Motivated and capable of independent work.
- Discretion with regard to confidential information.
EDUCATIONAL/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance is required.
- Master's degree is desirable.
- CPA or CPA-eligible is preferred.
- Minimum of four years of experience in corporate or non-profit accounting and/or public accounting is required.
