Senior R&D Wood Scientist Job at Koppers Inc.
Job Responsibilities
This senior level performer has proficiency in a variety of relevant skills and tasks and is recognized as one fully skilled in the field, having extensive experience. This individual works under minimal, broad supervision and can cope with new situations and special assignments which call for initiative, planning, judgment, and interpretation.
- Conducts research to determine composition, properties, behavior, utilization, development, treatments, and processing methods of wood and wood products with interaction with Harmarville and / or universities
- Analyzes physical, chemical, and biological properties of wood.
- Develops and improves methods of seasoning, preservation, and treating wood with substances to increase resistance to wear, fire, fungi, insects, and marine borers while working with the plants to approve processes.
- Conducts tests to determine ability of wood adhesives to withstand water, oil penetration, temperature extremes, and stability, strength, hardness, and crystallinity of wood under variety of conditions.
- Evaluates and improves effectiveness of industrial equipment and production processes.
- Determines best type of wood for specific application and investigates methods of turning waste wood materials into useful products.
- Position requires up to 25% overnight travel.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in wood science or related degree plus 7-10 years of relevant laboratory / field experience required; PhD in Wood Science plus 5 years of relevant laboratory / field experience preferred or bachelor’s degree with 15 years of relevant laboratory / field experience
- Experience with publishing research papers preferred
- Strong organizational, communication and analytical skills
- Knowledge of environmental and OSHA regulations
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel and current data software and emerging applications
