SSS STEM Skills Specialist Job at Central Alabama Community College
The Skills Specialist for the Student Support Services- STEM federally funded Trio project provides individual and small group skills development and group tutoring sessions to project participants in addition to course appropriate supplemental instruction in selected courses.
This is a temporary, grant-funded, and probationary position. Continued employment is dependent on continued funding.
This position is based in Alexander City.
1. Adheres to the policies, rules, and standards of Central Alabama Community College, the Alabama Community College System, accrediting agencies and federal regulatory bodies.
2. Prepares required reports as required by Central Alabama Community College, the Alabama Community College System, and other regulatory agencies.
3. Ensures institutional compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
4. Submits student services and Trio forms and data in timely manner as directed.
5. Assists Director in the implementation of activities and programs specified in the SSS-STEM project.
6. Develops and implements academic services and activities to assist low-income, first generation, and students with disabilities who are in need of academic assistance and enrolled in STEM career paths.
7. Develops processes in conjunction with the project director and staff to align program objectives and implementation.
8. Provides individual and group tutoring sessions to program participants for all courses identified as “high risk” in which participants enroll.
9. Acts as the liaison between the instructors at the College and the project to ensure that the supplemental instruction provided to participants is appropriate.
10. Establishes and maintains effective working relationship with students, faculty, and other college personnel and SSS-STEM staff.
11. Addresses assignment-specific problems the participants may be experiencing.
12. Documents activities as required by the objectives in the grant.
13. Monitors the student learning labs and assist students.
14. Relays student needs or programming concerns to the appropriate project personnel.
15. Assists in the recruitment of program participants.
16. Conducts seminars or mini-courses in areas supportive of student development.
17. Maintains student files in accordance with grant requirements.
18. Serves on college committees and attends meetings.
19. Performs other duties related to the position and assigned by supervisor.
1. Master’s Degree in Education, Counseling or related field from a regionally accredited institution of higher education is required.
2. Three (3) years’ experience in an educational setting developing and implementing academic assistance and services students in the target population served by the grant is required.
3. Demonstrated effective computer skills is required.
4. Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills is required.
5. Ability to coordinate and plan multiple activities and events is required.
6. Demonstrated ability to successfully work with the targeted population is required.
7. Ability to travel to and from campus locations and attend activities and events in designated areas as assigned is required.
8. Excellent customer services skills and ability to work with diverse populations is required.
9. Ability to work in a high demand collaborative team work area, maintain a positive attitude, communicate effectively, and manage multiple priorities is required.
10. Experience in academic counseling, coaching, or advising is preferred.
11. Experience working in a STEM-related field is preferred. 12. Experience in postsecondary education is preferred.
