Job Description

Title: Health Officer

Pay: $420-900/week DOE + housing, food and utilities

Classification: Full Time Season

Dates: May - August

Reports to: Camp Director, Assistant Camp Director, Leadership team

General Function: Under the supervision of the Executive Director, Assistant Camp Director, Leadership team the Health Officer lives in the Health Center to provide basic medical care to campers and staff. This includes daily medication distribution, first aid, health evaluations and monitoring health. The Health officer is meant to be the leader and constant face of the health center as other health professionals will assist. They will earn valuable experience not only as a care giver but as a leader. They will serve on the Summer leadership team assisting in the decisions of Camp operations.

The position is great for young medical professionals who are looking for leadership and management experience in healthcare. It can be use to log practicum hours in ones attempts to receive certification. Person can be medical student on track to work as a physician, nurse or other health professions.

Essential Functions:

  • To do what is necessary to create a safe and positive experience for others.
  • Participate in staff training and all staff meetings
  • Set a good example for your campers and fellow staff with your leadership
  • Interpret and supervise safety and health regulations
  • Take responsibility for the basic hygiene of the campers
  • Assist with inventory and upkeep of equipment
  • Assist in lost camper drill
  • Conduct a health check for all campers on the first day of each session.
  • Conduct a health check for all staff members during staff training.
  • Be present during check-in to collect all medications from parents and receive any special instructions for individual campers.
  • Maintain and keep order of all health forms with Office Staff
  • Be present during check-out to speak with each parent regarding any health problems their child experienced during the session.
  • Distribute medications daily to those campers needing them.
  • Evaluate a camper’s health and identify likely illness or injury. Consult physician if needed. Progress with best health care plan
  • Reside in the Health Center and monitor campers who may be sick or injured
  • Inform Camp Director and Program Director of any camper health problems.
  • Report any injuries to Camp Director and Program Director and make sure an incident report has been filed.
  • Assist in the process of filing incident reports
  • Contact parents if and when their camper sees the camp physician on call, is showing progressive symptoms or issues, or is taken to the hospital after first communicating with the Camp Director and Program Director.
  • Make sure that each camper and staff member has a Health Record.
  • Inform Office manager of those campers who do NOT have such a record on file.
  • Work with Counselors to recognize “homesickness” in campers.
  • Complete a pre-season and post-season inventory of all medical supplies.
  • Inform Program Director of any needed repairs and/or needed equipment.
  • Maintain cleanliness of infirmary at all times.
  • Be willing to participate in camp activities when appropriate.
  • keep explicit log of each visit made by a camper or staff member according to Health Department and ACA standards.
  • Keep first aid kits stocked in various areas around camp (check at end of each session).
  • Work with Leadership team to provide training for staff on infirmary procedures.
  • Work with Leadership team and staff to insure that health responsibilities are being followed for campers (proper hygiene, bug repellents, sun protection, nutrition, etc.)
  • Other related duties as assigned by the Director.
  • Assume additional responsibilities as directed by camp directors
  • Must be committed to carrying out the basic team purpose of YMCA Camp Winona and the Volusia Flagler YMCA and the four core values of honesty respect and responsibility.
  • Ability to serve and respond in a positive, respectful, timely, caring manner to a diverse background of campers

Pre-requisites:

  • Preferred RN, not required.
  • CMA or CNA
  • Have passed or able to pass Assisting with Self-Administration of Medications: Florida Laws.
  • First Aid, CPR, AED or can pass course
  • Driver’s License
  • Minimum of 21 years of age
  • Pass a drug test and background check
  • Like children and have the ability to work with them and to understand their needs
  • Good moral character
  • Strong mental and emotional health

Physical Requirements:

  • Walking (3 miles a day)
  • Running and playing with children
  • Ability to swim
  • Lifting (50 lbs.)
  • Carrying (50 lbs.)
