This role of the Program Assistant for the Summer Institute for the Gifted is to provide academic support to the students in the classrooms, and supervise, mentor, and coach students through their social and recreational interactions for our summer day program at Montclair University this summer.

Dates: Monday July 10 - Friday July 28, 2023
Time: 8:30 am - 4:30 pm

Essential Functions

• Adheres to policies and procedures as outlined in the SIG Employee Handbook, SIG Employee Manual, and the SIG Code of Professional Conduct.
• Completes all Pre-Program responsibilities:
• Reviews manual/Handbook.
• Attends and participates in the staff orientation prior to the beginning of the session.
• Assists with the coordination and implementation of parent orientation and student registration prior to the start of the program and on the opening day of the program.
• Supervises, accompanies, and participates in daily schedule of academic, recreational, and social interactions with students, including classroom, lunch, and activity times.
• Assists Instructors and students with daily academic assignments, based upon their course schedule. Classroom responsibilities may include taking attendance, activity set-up, and one-on-one or small group support.
• Seeks guidance and assistance from SIG staff regarding student related concerns (academic, recreational, emotional behavior) and follows through on communication as needed.
• Is responsible for supervising the conduct and dining room behavior of all students assigned to him/her during lunch; eats with students as assigned and participates in their social interactions as a coach and mentor.
• Attends all staff meetings as requested and any office administration, as assigned.
• Coordinates and communicates student medical needs and emergencies with site leadership.
• Demonstrates overall professionalism and a friendly, helpful, and positive attitude.
• Performs additional duties as assigned.

Work Environment

This job operates at a day college campus for a three-week period.

Physical Demands

• Be able to demonstrate speech clarity and recognition by speaking frequently for long periods of time to students, parents, faculty, and SIG staff while conveying detailed and important information.
• Monitor the health and safety of others by scanning large areas at both night and during the day.
• Maintain constant contact with others by interacting with staff and students and within the campus and campus facilities.

• This role is required to be at the assigned campus, Monday through Friday, 8:30 am. - 4:30 pm.
• Must be available all assigned days within 3 week period: Monday July 10 - Friday July 28, 2023.
• This role is required to attend staff orientation on Saturday July 8, 2023.
• This role is expected to commute to and from program location daily.

Education / Experience/ Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years old.
• Enrolled in a higher education program, undergraduate or graduate program, or recently graduated from a related program.
• Experience with children and young adults (ages 5-12) preferred.
• Academic, tutoring, and/or recreation supervisory experience with children.
