Job Description
The Hartt School, a conservatory of Music, Dance, and Theatre at the University of Hartford, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Jazz Studies.

Responsibilities
The successful applicant will teach undergraduate and graduate-level courses in jazz improvisation, jazz arranging, jazz applied lessons and, depending on the candidate’s qualifications and interest, jazz history and jazz theory. There will also be opportunities to teach in our innovative University Interdisciplinary Studies program. Other responsibilities may include overseeing jazz ensembles and programs. Additional responsibilities include curricula and program development and administration; participating in student recruitment, retention, and advising to enroll and maintain a strong, inclusive, and diverse student body; engaging in active, peer-reviewed creative/scholarly activities; serving on division, School, and/or University committees; maintaining office hours; and working collaboratively and productively with colleagues. Positive tenure and promotion decisions require excellent teaching; an active and successful program of creative/scholarly activity in the jazz discipline; and strong leadership contributions to the School, University, and external professional organizations that serve the broader jazz community.

Required Qualifications
Required Qualifications:

Terminal degree (MM, MFA, DMA, Ph.D.) in jazz performance, jazz studies, or other jazz music discipline at the time of appointment. A Bachelor of Music (BM) in jazz performance with significant, national, professional performing credits and experience will be considered.

Ongoing record of professional experience, artistic achievement, and creative activities in the candidate’s relevant jazz music discipline.

Evidence of, or potential for, successful university and/or conservatory-level teaching of applied lessons in jazz music disciplines and leading jazz ensembles at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Evidence of leadership, communication, organizational, and management skills as demonstrated through successful student recruitment and outreach efforts.

Ability to collaborate effectively with a wide, and culturally diverse, range of students, faculty, staff, and administration including evidence of successful mentorship of undergraduate and graduate students from diverse backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications:

Evidence of successful teaching and mentorship experience at a university, college, or conservatory for three (3) or more years.

Evidence of successful college-level teaching in the areas of either jazz music history or jazz music theory and/or developing courses or curricula in African American music history.

A notable record of professional practice and artistic accomplishment in a professional jazz setting as a performer, conductor, and/or arranger/composer. The record will document significant, creative activities in the public sphere and evidence of growing recognition in the field.

Evidence and experience working collaboratively and across disciplines.

The Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz was founded by American jazz saxophonist Jackie McLean. As one of the nation’s premier jazz programs, Hartt strives to develop aspiring and skilled jazz musicians. Through the curriculum, there is historical analysis, perspective, narratives on improvisation, and dialogue concerning the expression of jazz music. Using these practices along with tutelage and cultivation, students will realize their choices to create an individual style.

The department offers a Bachelor of Music and a Master of Music.
