Indiana Farmers Insurance is currently looking for an Underwriter I - Commercial Lines to join our Team. The ideal candidate will be local to Indiana or the surrounding states.

We are currently looking for a Commercial Lines Underwriter I to join our team of talented professionals in our fast-paced environment! You will be responsible for working collaboratively with both underwriters and assistant underwriters to evaluate and analyze risks. Commercial underwriting experience is preferred, but we could also consider someone with other property/casualty insurance experience, who is willing to work hard and learn quickly.

Qualifications and skills for the Underwriter I - Commercial Lines:

• Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent length of relevant work experience, preferred
• Two years of previous commercial underwriting experience is preferred, but equivalent experience in a property/casualty insurance company or the agency customer service field could also work
• Having an insurance designation or insurance-related coursework is preferred
• Being a good problem solver and decision maker is important
• Not everyone you communicate with is going to be receptive – it is important to be able to explain decisions clearly while maintaining a respectful tone
• Having good grammar skills, both verbally and in writing, is vital as you will be speaking with and writing emails to customers and agents regularly
• Strong interpersonal skills are critical in this job as you work closely with customers and co-workers
• Having excellent organizational skills and the ability to multi-task and meet deadlines is critical
• Strong automation/technology skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office, matter, of course

Responsibilities for the Underwriter I - Commercial Lines:

• Reviewing new insurance applications, renewals or changes for eligibility and risk acceptance, according to designated premium and authority guidelines
• Analyzing insurance information to determine the appropriate premiums, limits, retention, and coverages for approved risks
• Providing excellent customer service - the kind we all want when we speak with an insurance company (or any company really!)
• Working with other territory underwriters to resolve customers’ coverage and underwriting questions, and to resolve their problems
• Working with assigned agents to develop cooperative relationships that foster growth and profitability
• Doing whatever needs to be done to keep work moving efficiently including helping others
