Summary

The Lani Guinier Voting Rights Fellowship will expand FairVote’s ability to achieve our goals around proportional ranked choice voting (RCV) and demonstrate the value of proportional RCV in a rapidly evolving voting rights landscape. The Fellow would be responsible for conducting voting rights analyses (such as analyses regarding racially polarized voting, differential turnout, and ability to elect under various systems) in cities that are considering adopting FairVote’s priority reforms to provide critical data for voting rights organizations and litigators, reform campaigns and organizers, and advocates for equitable racial representation.
Position Type

The Voting Rights Fellow, a one-year fellowship, is a full-time exempt position. Exempt employees are expected to work the appropriate and necessary time to complete key assignments and related tasks on schedule. The Voting Rights Fellow will report to the Director of Policy & Research.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Voting Rights Fellow will contribute to FairVote advocacy strategy in the following ways:
  • Identify opportunities for proportional RCV to operate as a modified at-large voting rights remedy, with a particular emphasis on states with a state Voting Rights Act.
  • Analyze patterns of racially polarized voting, residential segregation, and voter turnout in cities considering RCV, those considering proportional RCV, and those covered by state Voting Rights Acts.
  • Model the impacts of various reforms in terms of equitable racial and ethnic representation, including single-winner districts, multi-winner districts with proportional RCV, and at-large proportional RCV. Communicate those findings effectively both within FairVote and with outside stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with and develop relationships within the voting rights community, the RCV legal roundtable, and other stakeholders.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities
  • Draft blog and opinion pieces, as assigned.
  • Coordinate with cross-department teams to meet strategic advocacy goals.
  • Support FairVote staff and partners by serving as a resource for information related to issues of racial, ethnic, and language minority representation and voting rights.
  • Maintain current working knowledge of general democracy and electoral reform issues, mainly related to the FairVote priority areas, especially relevant policy issues.
  • Utilize existing relationships and develop new relationships as needed to inform, coordinate, and execute FairVote strategies and campaigns.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Two to five years of experience in the voting rights space.
  • Experience with voting rights analytics tools and modeling. Strong technical skills in R or Python are preferred.
  • Existing relationships with practitioners in the voting rights space preferred.
  • Demonstrated interest in FairVote's core strategic priorities issue areas.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Familiarity with the legislative process.
  • Entrepreneurial spirit and a desire to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Self-motivated, creative, organized, and deeply committed to personal and organizational excellence.

Location

The FairVote office is located in Silver Spring, MD. This role can be performed remotely.

Salary & Benefits

The salary range for this position is $65,000 - $75,000, if annualized, commensurate with experience. FairVote offers a competitive benefits package for all full-time employees.
