Under direct supervision the Child Welfare Social Worker is responsible for providing child welfare counseling services to Indian families; protects children’s rights, promotes family unity; provides reunification services to Indian families; promotes healthy families. Maintains confidentiality of all privileged information.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, Psychology or related field plus two years’ experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Preference given to qualified Indians.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Accepts casework referral and case assignments from supervisor.

  • Works closely in concert with child welfare caseworkers providing family reunification services to Indian families.

  • Receives case referrals to prevent removal and out of home placement of dependent children.

  • Provides referral of appropriate services to families including medical, dental, mental health needs.

  • Assists parent in parenting skills and related considerations.

  • Encourages parental education in early child development.

  • Advocates school attendance.

  • Performs home visits working directly with families.

  • Monitors and maintains case record files on individual client’s progress.

  • Reports suspicion of child abuse and neglect.

  • Prepares monthly reports as requested by the Director.

  • Understands program policies and procedures.

  • Performs other duties as required.

Knowledge, Abilities, Skills, and Certifications
  • Knowledge of the Indian Child Welfare Act, Child Protection Teams, and State and Federal programs and their codes/laws.

  • Knowledge of State and Federal by-laws pertaining to children.

  • Knowledge in adolescent behavior.

  • Knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, and equipment.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in the English language both verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to work under heavy stress situations.

  • Skill in effective interviewing, listening and writing.

  • Skill in human relation as required working with children/youth and families.

  • Ability to work closely with Law Enforcement Department and the Tribal Courts on a daily basis.

  • Ability to work closely with outside agencies.

  • Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds and with co-workers at all levels.

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Skill in assessment summaries and case management.

  • Skill in operating business computers and office machines, including in a Windows environment, specifically Word, Excel, Access, and presentation software (such as PowerPoint).

Physical Demands
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk. The employee occasionally is required to stand; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Work Environment
  • Work is generally performed in an office setting with a moderate noise level. Evening and/or weekend work may be required and may be required to be on-call. Travel may be required for training, meetings, conferences, presentations, and other events.

  • The Washoe Tribe of Nevada & California requires a background check of each new hire for employment purposes. Therefore, all conditionally offered positions will be subject to the following:

  • Negative alcohol and drug screen

  • Meet requirements of Public Law 101-630

  • Obtain or possess a valid driver’s license for either the state of Nevada or California within 30 days

  • Must be insurable under the Washoe Tribe’s driving policy

Must pass and comply with the PL101.630-Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Protection Act. Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California requires any designated candidate to complete a pre-employment drug/alcohol screening, must possess a valid NV or CA. driver license within thirty (30) days of employment, (when applicable) and PL 101-630 Criminal / Character Investigation background check.
