UCLA Health Los Angeles, CA 90095

Responsibilities

The CNRC Biobank Technician (SRA 2) will collect and catalogue patient samples for the Clinical Neurogenomics Research
Center (CNRC) Biobank using a biobanking software program. Multiple biological samples will be transported from the clinic to the research lab and processed for storage and use in research experiments. You will also be responsible for independently
coordinating with the clinical research coordinators for sample collections, retrieving, aliquoting, and preparing samples for transfer from the biobank to researchers. You will contribute to workflow improvements and developing new SOPs around evolving biobank activities, as various sample types are incorporated into the bank. Strict adherence to HIPAA, CAP, and CLIA protocols regarding patient information and tracking of samples would be critical.

The CNRC Biobank Technician will also perform molecular biology experiments to support research projects investigating the genetic underpinnings of neurodevelopmental disorders and neurodegenerative diseases. Primary job duties include, but are not limited to: molecular and cellular biology techniques such as bio-specimen collection and handling (including human blood and tissue); DNA/RNA extraction; generating DNA plasmids; cell culture studies; performing PCR and gel electrophoresis; conducting real-time PCR experiments; isolating protein extracts and running Western blots; primary neuronal and cell line tissue culture; and/or preparing buffers, solutions, and chemicals for lab experiments.

Additional duties may involve the analysis of Sanger and/or next-generation genomic sequencing data to identify mutations and other forms of variation; utilizing bioinformatic methodologies and workflows (e.g., using online and commercial resources to analyze genetic sequence variations and perform additional genomic assessments) as well as data analysis and interpretation. You will be expected to maintain rigorous documentation and tracking information for all patient samples, clear documentation of experimental procedures and results; assist with the generation of figures and text for grant applications and other publications; provide technical assistance to others in the lab; and assist with training of SRAI, lab assistants, and students.
