The UVU Online Learner Guide I provides personalized support for students in fully online programs. The Learner Guide I (LG) will journey alongside students to help them navigate the university environment, and provide personalized, directive support to help them achieve success. The LG connects online students to the university community at large to nurture a sense of belonging and affinity. The LG guides students to cultivate an asset-based mindset, helping them discover and leverage their personal strengths. The LG works as a partner with online students to assess potential barriers and jointly take action to mitigate disruptive impact to the student's educational journey. The LG works with students across three distinctive phases of the student experience: Prospect to Admitted, Admitted to Enrolled, and Enrolled to Graduate. Additionally, the Learner Guide I will provide useful feedback to the university by gathering the perspectives of fully online students.

Summary of Responsibilities

1. Provide positive tracking of fully online students through each phase of the prospect to enrollment funnel. Assist students to identify and complete initial admissions and financial aid steps. Guide students through the completion of important onboarding processes such as new student orientation, advising, and course registration. Facilitate new student connections to important university staff and services such as advising, career development, student health, and technical and academic support resources. Respond to new student’s questions, provide encouragement and support, and mentor in the development of skills and strategies that lead to academic success such as time management, goal-setting, academic skills development, and motivation.

2. Cultivate relationships with enrolled online students to serve as their advocate and coach. Assist students to identify and overcome obstacles to their academic success. Help students identify and leverage their strengths to achieve their academic goals. Coach students in the development of skills and strategies in the areas of school-work-life balance, stress-management, and timely identification and utilization of support resources. Connect online students to meaningful opportunities to interact with the university community and other online students including special events, lectures, internships, and career and industry resources. Encourage graduating online students to commemorate their accomplishments by participating in university convocation and commencement activities and/or other virtual or in-person celebrations as appropriate.

3. Identify and create opportunities to gather online student voice and feedback through surveys and other tools. Utilize survey data to formulate and provide recommendations on university systems and processes.

4. Perform other job related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

Graduation from a regionally accredited institution with an associates degree in Psychology, Behavioral Science, Humanities, General Education, Education, Business, Technology, or a related field and one year experience related to the Summary of Duties OR any combination of related education and full-time experience related to the Summary of Duties totaling five years.


Preferred Qualifications:

Experience as a student with online courses and online programs and or experience working with adult learners and fully online students.

To serve the needs of fully online students who are often adult learners, we anticipate utilizing a flexible work arrangement to be available for students during and outside the traditional workweek and normal operating hours.

Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of admissions, financial aid, new student orientation, advising and other necessary student onboarding processes
  • Knowledge of Canvas LMS and technology assets required for online learning
  • Knowledge of interviewing and counseling/coaching techniques.
  • Knowledge of student development principles.
  • Knowledge of undergraduate education.

Skills

  • Interpersonal and communication skills. Can accurately restate the concerns and opinions of others while exhibiting patience and interest. Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated skill in coaching and guidance to include active listening, strong verbal abilities, warmth, empathy, confidence building, and other mentoring skills.
  • Demonstrated skill in building effective relationships with students to earn their trust and confidence.
  • Skill in the use of technology in the academic advising process.
